Rain, Rain, Go Away!

As someone who just has to stay active even when it’s raining, I go crazy sitting around inside all day. Don’t you? So, I’ve got the solution to our problem. Here’s a list of all my favorite indoor activity that put the “active” in “activity”!

DANCE PARTY

Put on your favorite CD and dance like there’s no tomorrow! You don’t even have to be good at dancing—ahem, like me—to have a good time. Just move and groove to the music. Maeve is good at picking out music, so she made me a CD with songs like Nobody’s Perfect by Hannah Montana, Kids of the Future by the Jonas Brothers, Girls Just Wanna Have Fun by Cyndi Lauper, and Suddenly I See by KT Tunstall. Not only do you get to rock out, but dancing gets you up off the couch!

INDOOR OLYMPICS

Get your friends together and create your very own all-indoor Olympics! Use tables and chairs to make an obstacle course, relay “race” across the living room (not a fast race ‘cuz I can’t run in the house), and give out prizes!

•    For a really challenging relay race, get some plastic spoons and some ping-pong balls. Try to balance the ping-pong ball on the spoon while you cross the room. If you really want to challenge yourself, try holding the spoon in your mouth! It’s harder than it sounds!

•    If you have a beach ball or some balloons, you can play indoor volleyball with them. Divide into teams and try to keep the ball or balloon from touching the floor! (Ave tip: make sure you’re not near any lamps or vases or things that could get knocked over!)

•    Have a three-legged race! Grab a partner and stand side-by-side. Have someone tie two of your legs together, then try to get across the room without falling over!

•    Limbo! Get a long stick and have two people hold it horizontally up high at first. Try to pass under it, face up, without bumping into it. See how low you can go!

MORE FUN GAMES!

Games like hide-and-go-seek, musical chairs, and charades are much more fun when you have a lot of people playing them. My favorite game, Mafia, is especially fun if you play with a huge group!

•    To play Mafia, pick one person to be “in charge.” This person won’t exactly play, but she’ll be super-important to the game!

•    Everyone except the person in charge will close her eyes, then the person in charge will pick someone to be the Killer. Don’t worry, no one’s ever actually died playing Mafia! Once the Killer’s been picked, everyone can open her eyes, get up, and start walking around. If you’re the Killer, don’t tell anyone – it’s a secret!

•    Now, everyone is supposed to mingle with each other, shaking hands and talking. The Killer is supposed to move through the crowd “killing” people by winking at them or by scratching their victim’s hand when they go to shake hands. If the Killer “kills” you, you have to wait 10 whole seconds before you “die.” When you do “die,” you have to be loud and dramatic. The louder and sillier your “death,” the better! Guess who is best at this part—um, MAEVE!

•    If you think you know who the Killer is, you can whisper it to the person in charge. If you’re right, then you win the game, but if you’re wrong, you’re “dead”!

you tell us ...
What do you do to stay active when it’s raining outside and you’re cooped up indoors?
