Pet Talk: Homemade Dog Treats

Woof, Marty fans!

Even though we dogs love to cruise for table scraps, did you know that there are some foods that are really bad for us?  Vets say that sticking to dog food is always the best idea, but if you are going to give us a special treat—my preference, because what is life without a treat now and then?—make sure to stay away from these foods: grapes, onions, chocolate, and mushrooms. They can make us canines very sick. Bring me the Pepto-Bismol!

Make your own doggie treats that really put the yum in yummy! Here are two natural puppy recipes that you can make with your parents help.  I can’t wait to sink my teeth into these doggie delights! Maybe I’ll invite my posse over for a little soiree. Louie loves his treats, too!

Pumpkin Doggie Treats

Ingredients:

1 15 oz. can of mashed pure pumpkin (not spiced pie) filling
¾ cup of cream of wheat or rice cereal (dry)
½ cup of dry powered milk

Directions:

1. Have an adult preheat oven to 300 degrees.
2. Mix all ingredients together in a bowl.
3. Drop a small spoonful of the batter onto a lightly greased baking sheet.
4. Bake for 15-20 minutes. (Don’t forget your oven mitts, ouch!)
5. You can make tiny treats for smaller dogs.

Apple Biscuits

Ingredients:

2 cups whole wheat flour
1 cup rye flour
1 apple—diced into small pieces
1 egg—beaten
1/3 cup vegetable oil
2 tsp. Flaxseeds
1/2 cup water (add more if needed)
1/4 cup natural applesauce

Directions:

1. Have an adult preheat oven to 350 degrees.
2. Grease cookie sheet.
3. Combine flours into a large mixing bowl.
4. Add apple, egg, oil, and water; mix until well blended.
5. On floured surface, roll dough out to 1/4"-inch thickness.
6. Cut with cookie cutters of your choice. (Bone-shaped is my favorite!)
7. Bake in preheated oven 35 to 40 minutes.
8. Turn off oven. Leave treats in oven over night to harden.
9. Store baked treats in airtight container or plastic bag and place in refrigerator or freezer.

you tell us ...
I like to eat these homemade treats out of a crystal dish with a big silver "M" on it. What does your pet like to eat?

Woof,
