Cool Confidence

Dear Journal,

I’ve had my fair share of embarrassing moments, but I can usually chalk it up to being kind of a klutz. But today I had a different kind of embarrassing moment. I raised my hand to give an answer in Ms. Rodriguez’s class—and I was totally wrong! How embarrassing! I could feel my face turn red, and I’m pretty sure Ms. R noticed because she asked me to stay a few minutes after class. She explained that giving a wrong answer in class is nothing to be embarrassed about. It happens. She said she would much rather have someone raise her hand and give the wrong answer than not raise her hand at all. She said it’s all about confidence. I still felt pretty bad, though.

Confidence—that’s something I really want to work on this year at school. I know I do well on tests and essays and things like that, but I’m always hesitant to share my work with other kids. Sometimes, Ms. Rodriguez and my other teachers ask us to get up in front of the class to share something we’ve written. I always feel queasy before something like that—not only because I’m a total klutz, but I always think, what if people think my work is dumb? I know Anna and Joline—the reigning Queens of Mean—will snicker no matter what I do, but it always feels like a leap of faith when I share my work with others. I'll just have to practice taking that leap, won't I? Especially if I want to be a writer.

	some times whene you'v had an emmbarising moment you feel lost like you dont belong there. well, being lost is just like finding somthing you wernt looking for. if you get in one of those problems, just remember somthing good can come out of it.

. i know im smart but that makes it a little harder 2 share my work. Like 1 time i wrote this really good descriptive paragraph 4 creative writing, with all these cool words and stuff, but i didn't share it becuz i thought it would make me seem lika a smartie. But sometimes i will share. 50/50.

I think you should never be ashamed of your intelligence. But, you're right. There is a right way and a wrong way to show it off. You can share your work without seeming like a know-it-all, as long as you make sure you give other people a chance to share their work and extend the same politeness you'd want from your classmates.

Even if you feel like you already know the lesson, there are still a lot of reasons why you should pay attention. A lot of learning happens when the class gets into a discussion -- your classmates and your teachers can give you perspectives you haven't thought of. And, it's also just plain good manners to pay attention. You'd want people to pay attention to you if you were teaching, wouldn't you? Good luck!

	I am really shy to speak in front of the whole class and to share something to the class. But now I m ok at it, really. In grade 3, I had to share my piece of work that i had done in class. So i did. Then the next day. I became more confident.

In one of my classes I don't like to raise my hand because if i give the wrong answer, the teacher makes fun of me in front of the class, but If i dont raise my hand he gets mad and says i don't know anything and he once called me stupid!

	It depends on what I'm sharing. If I'm sharing my answers for a class worksheet then I'm fine, but if I have to read my report, or paragraph, (things like that,) I get a little nervous! Yeah, whenever we're reading out loud in class, I quickly skim the pages or paragraphs that I'm supposed to read so that I feel more confident about the words when I have to say them aloud. I think everyone should share there answers because I think that everyone can have a different point of view..U might think of it this way...but another person might look at in a different way.Then you can talk it out and actually see why your answer is wrong! 	i answer wrong all the time, and when I feel scared about doing something I repeat these words to myself "you are confident, you are cool, you know that it is not a big deal" then I take deep breath. Char please reply. I beg you. I really do feel confident to go up to the class and share my work but it is really awkword when you get an answer wrong. Sometimes kids laugh if you make a mistake. My teacher never calls on me when I raise my hand though. IT IS SO annoying. I mean when a person wants to be called on and dose not get picked it is REALLY annoying. I think to get up there and share your work is a treausre.

You're right -- sharing your work can be a very positive experience, so it would be great if you could do it all the time! Maybe your teacher is trying to encourage other people to share their work, too.

	it takes alotof cool confidence to go up to the board and answer a question... especially in my school. but i try hard and the majority of the time i get it right and was glad i tried... it can be embarrasing to get an answer wrong but if you laugh it off and so do others but you know they are laughing with you NOT at you it helps.

I feel confident enough to share my work (at least most of the time) but for those of you who don't, here's some advice: If you are ever shy about asking what seems like a stupid question my mother always tells me, "The only silly question is one not asked." I always think about that when I get nervous!

Sometimes when i raise my hand in class to ask a question, i ask it like once i asked if alaska was closer to russia because it used to belong to them and on the world map it is. she made me embarresed by yelling at me. for the rest of the day i didnt even think about raising my hand. smilies/grin.gif

That's totally unfair! And that's a very good question! Try not to let her discourage you from raising your hand again. Just like my friend Katani says, you've got to get back in the saddle again as soon as possible!

Ugh. I know. Unfortunately, our bodies have their own little ways of showing OTHERS how embarrassed we are, like a red face, shaking hands, or stuttered words. The only way to really get over those things is to take deep breaths when you start to feel nervous. That will help calm you down a bit!

Ditto ulajay!!! I have SO much more confidence because I'm at an all girls school. Once I had a book report and I had to get up and present it. I kept stuttering and saying Ummmmm.... Meanwhile my crush, and everyone else was laughing really hard!!! I was SO embarrassed!!!! But I think he likes me even though we go to different schools, so people forget about embarrassing moments. If you just pretend it never happened, people will forget easily. Walk into school the next day with more confidence than you ever did before, and people will admire you because of your courage and confidence (my schools goals) especially people who are shy and ussually make the most mistakes!!

I really don't like seeing myself on TV for the middle school news or for the elections- embarrasing! I get even more embarrassed because I have a twin sister and she is on there too. Everyone stares at me- I hate it!

Yeah! Isn't it weird that when you see yourself on TV, you look like a total stranger? Or, when you hear your voice on a recording, you sound COMPLETELY different? It's creepy!

Oh yah! I love putting my hand up in class and answerring a question. When I get it right I feel good about myself, and when I get it wrong I just shrug it off because I'm not the only one who doesn't answer it right all the time! I'm actually one of the people who get the answer right!

Well when I go up to say what we write in English papers I have so much fun! I say all the different characters in a different voice so everyone laughs and enjoys my writeing! Yes, I do feel confident to raise my hand in class. I mean why not. My teachers give you like extra credit for doing it. And I do go up and share my work but i do get kind of freaked out. But I still do it. And for those of you who said ur class started laughing, ask them why didn't they come up in front of the class. And dont give them time to answer just say... "thats what I thought"!!! It works EVERY time. I hope my advice will help you.

Yes and that's because I usally have the right answer {not trying to show off} and because even when I don't my teachers are really nice about it. I do get nervous in front of crowds but at school when I make a presentation I just try to think of everybody as my equal and that we are all nervous.

That's a great point. There's a difference between confidence and arrogance. Confidence is about believing in yourself and your abilities. Arrogance is when you have confidence -- but you also put other people down while trying to build yourself up. That's a Queen of Mean thing to do!

When I put up my hand I feel confindent because I`m guessing and if the answer is wrong it is ok because the teacher won`t get mad at you because you weren`t listening because they know that your just guessing and you gave it your best.I love going up to the front of the class, I never get embarressed or anything... public speaking is my thing! In my class, if you get the wrong answer, our teacher makes you look up the answer in our reading book. Or, she makes you look it up in the dictonairy. Or where ever the answer is. So I dont usually raise my hand unless im POSATIVE its the right answer!!
