I Haiku... Do You?

Today, Ms. Rodriguez taught us about haikus, which are Japanese poems. Haikus only have three lines, and the difference from other poems is that it has to have 17 syllables. There are many ways to do it but we learned this way is the easiest:

Line One: 5 syllables Line Two: 7 syllablesLine Three: 5 syllables

Next, we had to write a few of these poems in our class journals. I really liked the haikus I wrote, so I raised my hand to read mine out loud in class. Scary! But, I remembered the advice I got from BSG fans: I took a few deep breaths and told myself that no matter what anyone said, I’d still believe my poems were GOOD. And guess what—I was totally fine! My voice didn’t even shake! It made me feel so much better when people said they felt embarrassed in school and had some of the same experiences I have been through.

Ha ha, clever aren't I? And I just noticed that the last one Charlotte wrote doesn't follow the 5, 7, 5 format! Because A-ver-y Ka-tan-i is SIX syllables, not five! Did anyone else notice that?

Clouds skirting above
A depth of curious blue
The sky is crying

gosh, here's another one i wrote, getting addicted!

Thunder crashes hard
Zigzag inks across the sky
Clouds bleed, then tears fall

this one isnt a haiku, its a tanka

Starry pinpricks soar
Angels rest their heads in clouds
A lullaby starts
Soothing the child to sleep
Winged horses blanket the sky

its the same thing as a haiku except with two extra lines at the bottom, each 7 syllables.
