I got the skinny on what Italian girls are LOVING right now from my new friend Federica Panariello! She grew up in Italy, but now she is living in the States for a year to attend an American high school!
Charlotte Ramsey: Hey Fede! So, what kind of music are Italian girls listening to right now?
Fede Panariello: Hi Charlotte! In Italy, girls who are about 12 or 13 think a good idol is Hannah Montana. All the artists of the Disney Channel are really popular.
CR: What about TV shows? Are Disney Channel shows popular, too?
FP: Disney Channel shows are really popular, but there is also an animated show called Winx Club that is really popular, too.
CR: Italy is known for being one of the most fashionable areas of Europe. What are girls my age wearing right NOW?
FP: The jeans are straighter at the end, and shirts are not as long as they are here. Important designers are Phard, Denny Rose, Sweet Years, and Baci & Abbracci.
CR: What are some popular pastimes of girls when they’re not at school and doing homework and stuff?
FP: Sports are our life! We like soccer, swimming, and volleyball.
CR: Awesome! Thanks, Fede!
ITALY FAST FACTS:
Country name: Italia (Italy)
Capital: Roma (Rome)
President: Giorgio Napolitano
Languages spoken: Italiano (Italian)
FAMOUS SIGHTS:
The Coliseum: Located in Rome, this ancient stadium once seated 60,000 spectators of competitions among gladiators. Yikes! Also in Rome are the ancient ruins of the Roman Forum, which is where Julius Caesar conducted his business around 63 BC.
The Leaning Tower of Pisa: Yep, it really DOES lean to one side! Almost from the get-go in the year 1360, this building began tipping over at the rate of 1 millimeter per year until it was reinforced in 1999.
Venice: This breathtaking city was built on top of 117 small islands! So, inside the city is a network of 150 canals and 409 bridges so that people can get around. Venice also has many tourist attractions, like St. Mark’s Basilica, which is a famous cathedral in St. Mark’s Square (also home to, like, a billion pigeons!).
Florence: Like Venice, Florence is an amazing city filled with beautiful things—churches, plazas, art, and architecture. In fact, Florence was where a ton of artists like Leonardo da Vinci and Michelangelo created their most famous works 500 years ago during the Renaissance.
