Global Girl: The City of Light
Paris will always hold a special place in my heart! It’s one of my favorite cities—and not just because Sophie and Orangina live there! Paris has so much culture and so many amazing things to do, it was hard to decide what talk about, but I managed to choose a few of my favorite memories. So, if you want to know more about one of the places this Global Girl has been lucky enough to call home, keep reading! Oooh La La! Paris is the biggest city in France, and also the capital city. Paris is built on the Seine, a big river that runs right through the middle of the city and separates it into the Left Bank and the Right Bank. A lot of famous artists, musicians, and writers used to live on the Left Bank, and the Right Bank has always been considered VERY fashionable and has some of the best shopping districts in Paris. A lot of people call Paris the City of Light. No one is absolutely sure where it got that name, but some perople believe it's because Paris was one of the first cities in Europe to get gas street lamps in the 1800s. Today Paris is famous for the way the city lights up after dark—it really is a beautiful sight! Fabuleux sights to see Taking a boat tour along the River Seine is a great way to sight-see in Paris, because many of the most famous places in the city can be seen from the river, like the Eiffel Tower and the Musée du Louvre. There are also a lot of gorgeous old bridges (called ponts in French) that cross the Seine. One of my favorites is Pont Alexandre III, which is decorated with the most beautiful statues and pillars. How could I talk about famous Paris sights and not mention the Eiffel Tower? This might just be the most famous place in the whole city! It was originally built way back in the 1880s as a special feature for a great big celebration called the Exposition Universelle that was held in Paris in 1889. Back then, it was the tallest structure in the whole world! The views of the city from the top floor are incredible! But, even if you’re afraid of heights, don’t worry. You can still enjoy the Eiffel Tower from the ground, especially after dark when the whole thing lights up! Cathédrale Notre Dame de Paris is a huge cathedral (which is a kind of church) that’s very old, very beautiful, and very famous. Notre Dame is known all over the world for its amazing architecture, especially the statues and stained glass windows that decorate it. A French author named Victor Hugo found the Notre Dame Cathedral so inspiring that he wrote a novel that takes place there, called The Hunchback of Notre Dame. Maybe you’ve seen the Disney movie version? Bon Appétit! A lot of countries are famous for their unique and delicious foods, and France is no exception. People all over the world love French fromage (cheese) and baguettes (a long, thin loaf of bread). And naturally, France’s capital city is one of the best places to go if you want to try them out! Birthplace of Haute Couture I may not be a fashionista like Katani, or a rising star like Maeve, but even I can’t resist going window-shopping in Paris! Paris has some really amazing fashion districts, and Sophie and I could spend hours walking around the Champs Elysées and Triangle d’Or, just checking out the window displays at all the boutiques! Paris is considered one of the fashion centers of the world. In fact, haute couture, a phrase used by fashionistas all over the world, is a French phrase that means “high fashion.” (One of Maeve’s favourite words, chic is another French fashion word: it means “stylish.”) Katani says that some of the most influential designers in the world got their start in Paris!
