Pen Pal Tips

articles_travel_globe_thumb.jpgThere are tons of things to learn from a BFF in another country! And here's a cool idea: why not get pen pals for your whole class? First, here are some tips for making your pen pal exchange fun and interesting for everyone.

Fun Tips!

1) Send Photos

In your very first letter, with your parents' permission, include a few pictures of you with your family and pets! Write everyone's name on the back, or tape the pictures into the letter and label around the outside. Ask your friend to send a photo back to you.

2) Gifts
Coins, one-dollar bills, hand-made jewelry (keep it small), stickers, postcards, and colorful drawings all give your letter extra sparkle. The more you add to your letter, the more you'll get back.

3) All About You
Tell your new friend all your favorite things: color, animal, place, season, sport, book, TV show… the list goes on! And don't forget to mention your birthday.

4) Ask Questions

If you're hoping for a long letter back, ask lots of questions! You can ask about all your pen pal's family, hometown, and favorite things, but don't stop there. Here are some more ideas. You may be surprised by the answers!

1. What holidays do you celebrate?

2. What music and TV shows are popular in your school?

3. Where do you go shopping and what kinds of clothes do you like to wear?

4. Do you play any sports?

5. What do you do after school?

6. What are your chores at home?

7. What pets do you have?

8. What do you eat for dinner?

9. What is one interesting fact about your country?<br />

Finding your Pen Pal

Talk to your parents and teachers first. Your school might already have a pen pal program! If not, you could share these links with your teacher.

1) World Wise Schools
This program links your whole class to one taught by a Peace Corps Volunteer. You learn about a totally different culture and it's all free. Ask your teacher about joining!

2) International Pen Pal Club
Your teacher can sign up your whole class for pen pals from almost any country in the world! Keep in mind that your school will have to pay to join this program.
