Kgirl: Fashion Designer Tells All!

You asked your most stylin’ questions… and we’ve got the answers! Real-life designer Amy Tan tells us how to break into the designing biz, where to look for inspiration, and what it takes to be a true fashionista. Read below to learn all her secrets of success!

Amy started her own clothing label called Amy Tangerine five years ago when she was working as a professional stylist. Amy’s designs are super-soft, super-cute tee-shirts with adorable fabric cut-outs of things like love birds and snow angels and fun saying like “Oh Deer!” (with a cut-out of a deer) and “Dream Big.” She makes her shirts special by cutting out cute shapes and words from one color shirt and then sewing them on a different color shirt! (Check them out at www.amytangerine.com!)

Click on a thumbnail below to see a larger image.

This 29-year-old designer from Atlanta, Georgia, is the REAL DEAL. She followed her dreams of becoming a designer, and now her designs are worn by celebs like Miley Cyrus, Carrie Underwood, Hilary Duff, and Mandy Moore. Even Madonna is a fan! Her shirts are sold in more than 200 stores worldwide.

But, she totally didn’t just wake up one morning and decide to be a famous fashion designer! She had to work hard and believe in herself to get where she is today.

Sorry, we are not taking any more comments on this page.

Thank you to Amy Tan for giving us a behind-the-scenes look at being a fashion designer!

TTYL,

What tools do you think all fashion designers should have?

Knowledge is the most powerful tool -- and secondly a willingness to learn. As far as real tools go, it's good to have a good pair of scissors (that aren't too heavy) needles, thread, a good sewing machine, fun fabrics that you like to work with and a nice open area to work with. Also a little notebook to sketch out or write ideas in is also a must-have.

Hi Amy,
I was wondering, about how much time does it take you to make a shirt? What about a pair of pants. Please write back!
Thanx,
SB

I am not sure about a pair of pants, but as far as a tee shirt goes, I would say it takes a few hours for the first sample. From the sketch I either make a template or have someone else do it on the computer. If it is hand stitched, it can take anywhere from a half an hour to 2 hours to sew depending on the complexity of the design. Embroidery machines work much faster and can produce a lot more than we can by hand, so we have half our designs done by hand and half by machine.

How long have you been wanting to be a fashion designer? And how old were you when you when you started designing clothes? smilies/cheesy.gif smilies/cheesy.gif smilies/cheesy.gif smilies/cheesy.gif

For as long as I can remember I have always loved fashion. I started actually designing my senior year of high school when I started sewing. I loved combining patterns that I bought at fabric stores.

Dear Amy,
I'm not the most popular girl in school and I don't have the best clothes. I sometimes think people are talking about how ugly my clothes are. What do I do? Alsso is it okay to have your own style. Like say mini skirts are in but i just wear jeans and tees and other girls are wearing "whats in style". I feel left out sometimes because i dont have the greatest clothes. Great website by the way

Amy, what tips do you have for girls who want to start THEIR own buisnesses when they get older?

It takes a lot of work to start your own business. My best advice is to get as much experience as possible by interning and working for others. It is so important to work hard and always be professional, even when you are not being paid for an internship, it can be the most valuable part and you can learn so much.

Inspiration is found everywhere -- the world around me, the interesting people I meet, magazines, and paper products. I love getting inspired by greeting cards and printed material. It's probably the reason I also love scrapbooking so much in my free time!

How long did it take you to learn how to make the shirts?

I was just wondering why you decided to become a fashion designer?
What inspired you?
Did you ever consider any other careers?
Thanks!

I used to want to be an orthodontist and a bank teller when I was little. When I went to college, my first major was Pre-Med, and then right before starting school I changed it to Industrial Design, which falls under the school of Architecture. I just loved anything that had to do with design and using my hands and being crafty.

Hey Amy!

I love designing clothes, but umm...well, I'm not too fond of sewing. Is it possible to be a fashion designer, but have other people sew the clothes? I don't know much about the business. smilies/smiley.gif By the way, I love your designs!

It is absolutely possible to be a designer without having to sew. I am not great on the sewing machine, so I like to stitch stuff by hand. It's great when you have good people who can help execute the design you have in mind. It's really about building a team -- especially if there are certain things you don't like to do, you can have them do it.
