Kgirl: Fashion Designer Tells All!

You asked your most stylin’ questions… and we’ve got the answers! Real-life designer Amy Tan tells us how to break into the designing biz, where to look for inspiration, and what it takes to be a true fashionista. Read below to learn all her secrets of success!

Amy started her own clothing label called Amy Tangerine five years ago when she was working as a professional stylist. Amy’s designs are super-soft, super-cute tee-shirts with adorable fabric cut-outs of things like love birds and snow angels and fun saying like “Oh Deer!” (with a cut-out of a deer) and “Dream Big.” She makes her shirts special by cutting out cute shapes and words from one color shirt and then sewing them on a different color shirt! (Check them out at www.amytangerine.com!)

This 29-year-old designer from Atlanta, Georgia, is the REAL DEAL. She followed her dreams of becoming a designer, and now her designs are worn by celebs like Miley Cyrus, Carrie Underwood, Hilary Duff, and Mandy Moore. Even Madonna is a fan! Her shirts are sold in more than 200 stores worldwide.

But, she totally didn’t just wake up one morning and decide to be a famous fashion designer! She had to work hard and believe in herself to get where she is today.

Sorry, we are not taking any more comments on this page.

Thank you to Amy Tan for giving us a behind-the-scenes look at being a fashion designer!

TTYL,

Being a fashion designer is a lot of fun. I get to be involved in a fast paced industry with a lot of pretty people and pretty things. It is also a lot of work though too, and not just fashion shows and fun. It is pretty great to be in a fun industry with a lot of different aspects.

Me and my friend want to start a fashion line. We always are sketching out outfits and different accesories. How should we get it started?

Keep doing what you are doing! Try to wear something you make as often as possible, because you are your best advertisement. Maybe ask your parents to organize a little fashion show for friends and family. You may get some orders! I also encourage you to keep an open mind and maybe even try and get an internship. The experience of an internship is truly invaluable.

do(or did?) people ever make you feel bad because of what you wore? or were you like super popular becuase of your clothes?

If I look back on old pictures, I definitely laugh because I am not sure what I was thinking when I put together certain outfits. I wasn't super popular or super trendy. I just wore what I like and I try to do the same now!

what were your favorite stores when you were younger? Do any really famous people wear you designs? what kind of things do you design? dresses, skirts shirts? sorry i am asking so many questions hope you answer then
redsoxfreak24

I loved the GAP, Banana Republic, Forever 21, Guess and Limited Too. We have a few great celebrities like Hannah Montana, Keira Knightley, and Hilary Duff. Right now we only design tops -- mostly in the tee shirt category. I have done dresses and skirts in the past, but right now it's primarily tees.

Hey! Thanks for looking at all our questions. I was wondering, do you have to do research before you design something?? Like, looking up what types of desings people are buying and stuff or do you just think of a cool design and go for it? Also, does Hilary Duff, and Miley Cyrus really wear your shirts?? I so, how does it feel??? Thanks! smilies/wink.gif

You can do a lot of research. I like to look at magazines or books for inspiration. Sometimes taking a trip can be considered research. Do you remember the episode of Hannah Montana with Dolly Parton? Miley Cyrus is wearing our green love birds tee. Also in the episode where she forgets the words to the National Anthem, she is wearing our layered I LOVE LA shirt.

Did you ever feel pressured as a kid to always wear name brands, or did you go with what you liked? smilies/kiss.gif

I used to love wearing ESPRIT and GUESS, and yes I did feel pressure at school to wear name brands. I think everyone experiences that to a certain extent. I liked to mix and match things though because my parents wouldn't always buy me the name brands. Now I totally go with whatever I like, whether it's from Forever 21 or Marc Jacobs.
