"Keeping it Clean" on the Broomball Rink

If you ever see a bunch of people sliding across a frozen pond in sneakers waving brooms around, stay calm—I repeat—STAY CALM! Whatever you do, don’t panic.

I promise your pond hasn’t been overtaken by an army of snow-phobic neat-freaks. Chances are you’ve probably found yourself a good old game of BROOMBALL, and just because they’ve got brooms, that doesn’t mean they won’t play dirty.

What is it?

Broomball is a lot like ice hockey—you play on an ice rink, you try to score more goals than your opponent, and you wear protective gear like helmets, padding, and guards. But don’t be fooled! There are a few very big differences.

Where did it come from?

Canadian streetcar workers used to play broomball in the early 1900s with corn brooms and small soccer balls (soccer? sweet!). Today, players thwack little rubber balls around the ice and carry an aluminum stick with a broom-shaped head. My personal favorite part of broomball is that sneakers are worn instead of ice skates. That means plenty of slipping and falling—always fun in proper padding!

Who plays broomball?

Broomball is most popular in Canada and the United States - Minnesota being the U.S. headquarters. But actually, there are recreational broomball leagues all over the world, including Australia, Japan, Sweden, Germany, Italy, and Switzerland. It might even become part of the Olympics someday!

Can I play?

Of course! I’d recommend finding a safe rink or frozen-over pond (ask an adult to help you determine whether it's safe), grabbing a broom from the cleaning closet, and starting a league all of your very own as soon as possible. Hey, you might just help spread the trend. At the very least, you’ll have an excuse to warm up with a delicious hot chocolate when you’re done!

Curling- it's a Scottish sport that takes place on an ice skating rink. There is a target, and people slide across the ice, pushing iron balls with brooms. Whoever gets their iron ball closest to the target wins.

I've heard about the sport you're talking about, Ave. I think the sport is a sport animals play on the movie called "The Wild." It looks fun but if you have to ice skate, YIKES! I might be a bad player on the team I am on for that game/round.

Once on Amazing Race, they had this detour in Canada where they chose between curling and logrolling. They said they were the two popular Canadian sports, but I know loads of Canadians who had never even heard of logrolling. Does this count? I hope so...
