Festive Flicks for Frigid Nights!

December is such a faaabulous month! I love all the gorgeous lights and decorations, and the way everyone seems to be in the best mood all month long. Plus, there’s nothing cozier than curling up with a cup of hot cocoa and watching your favorite winter-ish movie. Some of these flicks are just about winter, but there are also some great Christmas classics I wanted to share with you. Even if you don’t celebrate Christmas, these movies will definitely get you into a warm and fuzzy mood!

It’s a Wonderful Life
(1946) Starring: James Stewart, Donna Reed, and Lionel Barrymore
Rating: Not Rated

What’s it all about?
George Bailey is usually a happy guy, but he’s not having a very merry Christmas Eve. A whole bunch of money has gone missing from the building and loan (kind of like a bank) where he works. If he can’t find it, he’ll go to jail! So, George makes a wish that he was never born, because he thinks his friends and family would be better off without him. It’s up to an angel named Clarence to help George see all the good things he’s done for people and remember how wonderful life really is.

My review:
This is my absolute most favorite holiday movie! Watching it always leaves me all happy and makes me want to go do nice things for the people I love. My favorite scenes are the ones with George and the love of his life, Mary. They’re a perfect couple, so smart and kind, and trés romantique! I should warn you girls that the ending makes me cry every single year—but don’t worry, they’re tears of joy! (That doesn’t stop Sam and Dad from teasing me, though!)

Snow Day

(2000) Starring: Chris Elliott, Mark Webber, and Zena Grey
Rating: PG

What’s it all about?

Natalie Brandston has spent a too-warm winter wishing for snow. She finally gets her wish and school is cancelled, but the wicked “Snowplowman” tries to end her hard-earned snow day by… plowing the snow. Natalie goes on a mission to stop the Snowplowman before he takes away all of the snow!

My review:
Snow days are my absolute most favoritastic part of wintertime! This movie reminds me of what it’s like to look out the window in the morning before school and see inches upon inches of snowy, snow, snow! It’s the wondiferous! Even if you’ve never had a snow day, there’s still a ton to love about this movie. My favorite line is, “Anything can happen on a snow day!”

How the Grinch Stole Christmas

(2000) Starring: Jim Carrey, Taylor Momsen, and Christine Baranski
Rating: PG

What’s it all about?

All the “Whos” in Whoville are getting ready for Christmas, their absolute favorite holiday. But the grumpy Grinch hates anything and everything about Christmas. He plans to steal all the Whos’ presents, decorations, and trees so he can stop Christmas from coming once and for all! A girl named Cindy Lou Who isn’t afraid of the Grinch and tries to make friends with him. (How brave is she?!) But, can she change his mind about his plan to steal Christmas?

My review:

This movie is sooo much fun! Jim Carrey is hilarious as the Grinch, and the sets and costumes are totally cool. Isabel says she could watch this movie over and over just for how amazing it looks. But I also love the old cartoon version from the ’60s—it’s so retro. I try to catch it on TV every year, but Sam always gets mad ‘cause I can’t help singing along with “You’re a Mean One, Mr. Grinch!”

Happy Feet
(2006) Starring: voices of Elijah Wood, Robin Williams, and Nicole Kidman
Rating: PG

What’s it all about?
Every penguin in Antarctica has a “Heartsong,” which they must learn to find their soul mate. Too bad Mumble has an awful singing voice. Instead, Mumble’s talent is… TAP DANCING! Mumble learns to accept himself just the way he is and sets out on adventure with new friends to find out where he belongs.

My review:
Super-cool computer animation, awesome songs, amazing dancing, and a hee-larious script make this movie a top choice for any winter movie night. Let’s face it, any movie all about performing and using talent is totally me.

The Muppet Christmas Carol

(1992) Starring: Michael Caine, and voices of David Goelz, Steve Whitmire, and Frank Oz
Rating: G

What’s it all about?

Ebenezer Scrooge (Caine) is a cranky old man with no Christmas spirit at all. Whenever someone wishes him a merry Christmas, all he says is “bah, humbug!” He won’t even let his clerk, Bob Cratchit (played by Kermit), spend Christmas Day with his family. Then, on Christmas Eve, four ghosts try to show Scrooge how much better life could be if he were nicer to people. The more he sees of his past, present, and future Christmases, the more Scrooge starts to think the ghosts might have a point.

My review:
OK, so I know what you’re thinking. Uh… Muppets? Yeah, well, I’m just going to come right out and admit that I absolutely LOVE this movie! Even my parents like to watch it. But, if you’re not a Muppet fan, there are many adaptations of this classic Charles Dickens novel (called simply A Christmas Carol) that you can rent. It can be kind of an intense story, but the Muppet version has laughs as well as thrills… plus, that Gonzo is so adorable!

Miracle on 34th Street

(1947) Starring: Natalie Wood, Edmund Gwenn, and Maureen O’Hara
Rating: Not Rated

What’s it all about?

Doris Walker thinks daydreams are silly, and she’s taught her daughter, Susan, to think so too—Susan doesn’t even believe in Santa Claus! Doris works at Macy’s department store in New York City, and she hires a sweet old guy named Kris Kringle to play Santa at the department store. When Kris says he’s the real Santa, Doris worries he might be crazy. But even though Doris doesn’t believe, Kris is so kind, generous, and sometimes even magical, that Susan wonders if Santa might be real after all.

My review:

A Christmas classic! I’ve watched this movie so many times—I can even say the lines along with the characters. I love how it’s all about believing in yourself and your friends, and making up your own mind instead of letting other people tell you what to think. It’s not just a great Christmas movie, it’s a total BSG kind of flick too!
