When I have my Kgirl Enterprises fashion/advice chain of shops around the world, I’m going to make sure my merchandise is AFFORDABLE. I think about it a lot this time of year when I’m shopping for friends and family with a very tight budget.
Until then, I’ve got some DIY (that’s do-it-yourself) gifts that are cheap, fun, and fabulous!
Berry Moss Wreath
What’s cool about the Berry Moss Wreath is that it’s actually ALIVE! That’s right—when you decorate your straw wreath with live moss, it’ll continue to grow on the straw!
What You’ll Need:
A small straw wreath (you can find these at most craft stores)
Floral Pins
Ribbon
Glue gun and glue sticks
Spool of green, medium gauge floral wire (found at most crafts stores)
Plastic grocery bags
Moss (usually found on rocks and trees in the woods or near lakes and rivers)
Berries (still on a branch)
Other pretty stuff you can find in the woods
Instructions:
1. Get outdoors! Grab a friend and find a patch of woods where you have permission to take things from. Gather live moss by lifting it gently off rocks and trees. Try not to tear small pieces—you’ll want large, flat pieces to cover your wreath. Shake out excess dirt, and look closely to make sure there aren’t any bugs—ewww!
2. Collect branches with red berries or buds on them, pine cones, tree bark, and other pretty stuff, and put it into the plastic grocery bags to take back with you.
3. Once you’ve returned to your workspace, cover the entire wreath with the moss using floral pins to secure it. Make sure the moss is fitted tightly onto the wreath—you might need a friend’s help on this!
4. Arrange your ribbon, berries, branches, pinecones, etc. in a design that you like on your wreath. Tightly wrap the floral wire around the wreath and your items so that they won’t come off. You can also use a glue gun to arrange your items the way you want them to look.
5. Use a wide piece of ribbon to make a large bow, and use a floral pin to fasten it in place on your wreath.
6. Use extra floral wire to make a hanger for the wreath if you want it to hang on a door, or place a large candle inside the wreath to make a beautifully festive centerpiece!
Homemade Jewelry Box
OK, I’ll admit. This gift is not 100 percent homemade, but the creativity factor is a 10+. Here is one way to decorate:
What You’ll Need:
An unfinished wood box with a clasp (found at most craft stores)
Washable paint
Paint brushes
Sandpaper
Stencils (optional)
Felt (enough to cover the inside of the box)
Glue gun
Scissors
Ruler
Pencil
Newspaper
Instructions:
1. Put on some old clothes and lay the newspaper over your workspace to protect it from any paint spatters!
2. Make sure the box is closed, then use the sandpaper to lightly sand the outside of the box to brush away any dust or splinters.
3. Here’s the fun part! On the outside of the box, design and draw (or stencil) a design on the top, sides, and bottom using a pencil.
4. Paint inside your pencil lines according to your festive and fun design! Be careful not to paint over the hinges or clasp of the box.
5. Let the paint sit and dry completely.
6. Once the paint is dry, open the box. Cut out enough felt to cover the bottom, top, and sides of the inside of the box.
7. Use the glue gun to fasten the felt to the top and bottom of the inside.
8. Trim any extra felt with scissors, and then let the glue dry.
*You can also take magazine or newspaper clippings and cover the outside of the box in a collage design. Use a glue stick to glue the clippings on the box, then use a sealer called Modge Podge (found at most craft stores) to paint over the clippings.
Holiday Ornament
This one is SUPER easy to make. It’s also a good babysitting or sleepover craft!
What You’ll Need:
One medium-sized Styrofoam ball for each ornament you make
Pipe cleaners
Fabric quilting squares (found at most craft stores)
Ribbon
Puff-paint or glitter pen (optional)
Glue gun
Instructions:
1. Stick a pipe cleaner (or two) into the Styrofoam ball to make a hook or loop. This will keep your ornament attached to your Christmas tree, door knob, whatever.
2. Use scissors to cut out shapes of fabric and ribbon.
3. Use the glue gun to fasten the fabric, ribbon, sparkles—whatever!—onto the Styrofoam ball.
4. Using the puff-paint or glitter pen, write a short message to the gift recipient on your ornament—remember to put the date, too!
