The 1990s saw the birth of tiny cell phones, Instant Messenger, Nick Jonas, AND Maeve Kaplan-Taylor! What a fantabulous decade! *Love to act? Check our our Drama Tower Club!* So, to help celebrate the 1990s, I’ve put together some of my fave movies from this stellar decade. Starting with… Home Alone (1990) Starring Macaulay Culkin, Joe Pesci, Daniel Stern, and Catherine O’Hara Rated: PG Nope, I’m not talking about Home Alone 2, 3, or 4. I’m talking about the original version—you know, the one where Kevin McCallister slaps the aftershave on his cheeks and goes, “AUUUGGHH!”? Classic! Home Alone is the story of what happens when a kid’s family forgets him at home as they race to catch a plane to go on vacay. Two burglars think the house is empty and plan to rob it, but what they don’t know is that the kid (Kevin) will stop at nothing to protect his home. Flikchic Rating: 8 out of 10— I love the scenes where Kevin is living every kid’s dream—he jumps on his parent’s humongous bed AND eats junk food 24/7! ********** Free Willy (1993) Starring Keiko the Whale, Jason James Richter, and Lori Petty Rated: PG Again, not Free Willy 2, or 3 (what was it with sequels and threequels in the ’90s?), but the one where you see the kid with his fist up in the air and the whale in a perfect arched leap over him. So, so moving. Free Willy is about a kid who vandalizes a marina and has to work there for free as his punishment. At the marina, he and Willy the whale become special friends. So special, in fact, that Jesse decides to risk everything to help Willy go free. Does he actually free Willy? You’ll have to watch to find out. Flikchic Rating: 7 out of 10—it’s the kind of movie you want to watch when you need a good, uplifting cry. ********** Beethoven (1992) Starring Charles Grodin, Nicholle Tom, and Christopher Castile Rated: PG Yikes—again, I’m talking about the original, not Beethoven’s 2nd, 3rd, 4th, or even 5th! Beethoven is a cute St. Bernard who comes to the Newton family as a little puppy. Soon, he grows up into this massive creature who drools a lot and crashes into things. It’s fine, though, because the Newtons love him. So, when an evil vet sets his sights on Beethoven for a medical experiment, the Newtons band together to save their beloved pooch. Flikchic Rating: 7 out of 10—I’m so used to prim-and-proper Marty that a clumsy, messy dog is kind of like “ick!” to me. ********** The Sandlot (1993) Starring Tom Guiry, Mike Vitar, and Patrick Renna Rated: PG Unlike The Sandlot 2, and 3, the original version has one of my movie crushes: Benny “the Jet” Rodriguez (aka, Mike Vitar). Benny is the coolest kid on the block (and the best baseball player) when Scotty Smalls moves in. Yeah, he’s kind of nerdy, but Smalls is a good person, and so Benny befriends him. Benny and the other sandlot kids teach him how to play baseball and all is well and good until Smalls hits a VERY important ball that belongs to his step-dad over the neighbor’s fence—and it gets into the very large paws of a Beethoven-sized dog. You’ll have to watch to see if Smalls and the gang can get that ball back before his step-dad realizes it's missing! Flikchic Rating: 9 out of 10—I’m usually not one for sports flicks, but this one is funny, heartwarming, and just reminds me of summer. And, it’s got Benny “the Jet.” ********** A League of Their Own (1992) Geena Davis, Tom Hanks, and Madonna Rated: PG This is actually a flick that Avery insisted I watch—it’s one of her all-time faves, never mind ’90s faves—and now I love it. It’s the real-life story of the women’s baseball teams that played professionally from 1943 to about 1951. Yup, there was an All-American Girls Professional Baseball League back in the day—and they ROCKED. The film is about two sisters who try out for one of the teams, and what happens when one of them is traded to a rival squad. Flikchic Rating: 10 out of 10—this movie had me on the edge of my seat, cheering, and busting my gut laughing.
