I Miss My Fam!

Hola chicas.

I’m feeling a little down today because I really miss my dad. It’s so hard living here in Brookline while he still lives in Detroit! I’m happy I can be with my mama while she gets treated at the hospitals in Boston, but without my papa we don’t feel exactly like a whole family to me.

Avery told me that she sometimes misses her dad a lot, too. Her parents are divorced, and her dad lives in Colorado. She keeps in touch in with him by talking on the phone and on IM almost every day. And she always gets to visit him at least twice a year! I think she’s really lucky that her parents are still friendly with each other, even though her dad lives across the country from her.

Read about my dad coming to visit Mama, Elena Maria, and me in book #4 Out of Bounds.

you tell us ...
I know I’m not the only kid in the world who is living without one of her parents, but sometimes it feels that way. How do you deal with missing a parent or another family member?

Adios,

THEY R SO NICE, but it doesn't help when i cry in my pillow every night!

Hey
-My friends dad died around 3 years ago. I was really close with him. After he passed away, she didn't really want to talk about him. Later she realized it is ok to talk about him even if he isnt there with her.
-Realize it is okay to cry. Don't keep everything all bottled up. It is better if you let it out and people can help you.
-Also, I know my family members who have passed away would not like to look down on me and see me upset. Live your life to the fullest, you might not be able to change the situation, but you can make the best of it and realize everything is going to be okay and there are always people there for you.

Hola doubletrouble. It might be hard to hear stories about your dad when your family gets together, but it's also a good way to learn things about him that you never knew. And you'll probably get the chance to share your own happy memories of him, too. But if you start to feel really uncomfortable or upset, you should definitely tell an adult that you trust (like your mom) right away. Maybe you can hang out with other family members in another room when you start to feel bad.

Hola doubletrouble,

I'm so sorry to hear about your dad. Sometimes, it's really difficult to figure out the right way to talk about someone who has died, especially when it's with the person who was closest to him or her. Some people just don't say anything at all because they're afraid of bringing up painful memories or offending someone. The best way to let your boyfriend know about your dad is to bring him up in conversation and show that it isn't painful for you to talk about him. Your boyfriend will probably be relieved to follow your lead.

Hola TKA96,

I'm so sorry to hear about your friend. When a friend dies, you never really get over it, but you do take the memories and the things your friend has taught you as you move forward. Many times, when people pass away, it's not pleasant to think about them in that way. You're right. It's best to look at pictures and think of times when they were happy and healthy.

My dad died when I was seven and the way I think about it is. He want you to be happy now. So, Do what makes you happy.

Hola nikandsamfan,

That's great advice! If you think about the people who have passed away, ask yourself whether they would want you to feel sad and depressed for a long time, or if they would want you to grieve in your own way and then move forward. Unfortunately, death is a part of life, and all we can do is deal with it the best we can.

My mom died in a car accadent. I was depressed, and didn't want to talk to anyone. After that, my dad got cancer. Thank God he lived. But then I relized that it was OK to be sad about missing my mom. But that I had other responceabilitys to my family. I still think about her all the time, but i don't let it control my life! just call your dad and talk to some friends! it always helps me to talk about my mom.

Hola gigglebot21,

You're dealing with a very difficult situation, and I like your advice of talking about the family member who has passed away. Many people don't want to talk about loved ones who have passed away, but for other people, it helps them feel like their loved one's memory is being kept alive. Thinking about funny stories or memorable things they said or did might help you feel like they still have an impact on your life -- even after they're gone. Good luck to you and your dad.

i really dont want to talk about it but i will for yourb sake my uncle bob died and i feel so empty and i feel soory for my autie cause she is in the same house alone and she thinks about him all the time and he is on our sid e of the family and i remember when he always call me perdy not preety perdy cause he from alabama and he would always cheer me upand it brings me to tears cause a picture my sister drew for him when was alive she n never got a chance to give the picture to him and now i feel like nothing please help pleaseeeeeee isabel!!!!

Dear kekechi,

I am so sorry about your uncle. It is very sad when a family member dies, and everyone deals with it in different ways. Sometimes, you don't even feel sad right away. Other times, it's ALL you can think about. Talk about how you're feeling with your family and come up with ways that you can help your aunt feel less lonely. I think it would make you both feel better.

My Dad is in the army, so I don`t get to see him much. I e-mail him every so often, and I write him a whole lot! I usually think about what he`s doing and that he`s helping out where ever he is. I feel a lot better, because I know he`s needed out there. smilies/grin.gif

Hola BSG girl914,

You must be so proud of your dad. Will you thank him for us? We appreciate all the men and women out there serving our country. But, it doesn't make us miss them any less.

Any other kids who have moms/dads/aunts/uncles in the military? How do you keep in touch?
