Liv & Belle Interview
Hola! Isabel here. It was such a treat to talk to Liv and Belle—the cooking experts from Spatulatta.com. They film their own cooking webcasts for their site AND they wrote a cookbook designed with kids in mind! On their site, you can purchase the cookbook with all their recipes and watch their webcast cooking demonstrations! ********** How could anyone make time for school, friends, activities AND their own cooking show?! Well, it all started when Liv and Belle’s neighbor Gaylon Emerzian, thought it would be fun to do a webcast with kids teaching other kids to cook. “[Gaylon] knew we liked to cook,” said Liv. “My father is always talking about food and stuff so she thought it would be fun if we did it. She asked us if we wanted to be partners in it and we said yes!” Liv and Belle said that they really like cooking and started when they were about three years old. Cooking has always been a part of their home life—just like in mine with Mama and Elena Maria! Being around food and people cooking is what really made Liv and Belle enjoy teaching other kids to learn to cook, too. “Our Pop is the big cook in our house, so he taught us a lot. He is also Italian, so he used to cook a lot of Italian cuisine.” Belle said. Liv and Belle also have many other interests besides cooking. I wondered how they make time for them with Spatulatta! “We don’t film the webcast segments together, so we each do them separately, said Belle. “So, when one person is doing a segment, the other will do their homework and prepare for class. Like, somebody has to go to class then the other person will take over the recipe. That’s kind of how it functions.” Wow! Can you imagine? I would be so nervous in front of the camera, but Liv and Belle say that they just read over the recipes and pretend they are talking to a good friend about it. Liv and Belle get their recipes and ideas for their cookbook and web site from people who write to them. People from all around the world send in their recipes. After they receive a recipe that they both really like, they will ask the person who sent it if they can send four more. Liv and Belle like to base the segments on themes because they get so many recipes from different countries. It also helps to teach kids about all different kinds of food. “We try to do lots of ethnic backgrounds.” Belle was telling me. “One of our more recent ones was a Swedish segment. It was really good! We get kids from all over so, there are lots of recipes to pick from.” With all that cooking, I bet there are some accidents in the kitchen—especially with two girls and many bowls, ingredients, and spatulas! What has been their craziest moment in the kitchen? Well… “ I exploded a pie in the oven!” Liv told me. An exploding pie—whoa! Belle added, “Livy was making a blueberry pie, and she did not seal the pie crust tight enough. You know, baking is more of a science then cooking! We put it in the oven and only a few minutes later, we smelled something burning. We opened up the oven and saw that the top kind of blew off and blueberries seeped over the side of it onto the bottom of the oven! We laughed about it afterwards.” Well, that sounds pretty hilarious! You can watch some of Liv and Belle’s “oops!” moments here! Have some recipes you'd like to share with Liv and Belle? Spill 'em!
