Elizabeth Vigée LeBrun: Why, bonjour, Isabel! I did not know that you speak français.
IM: Actually, I don’t. But my best friend Charlotte does, and she’s trying to teach me a little. I want to learn another language since I already know two: English and Spanish.
EVL:Deux languages? And only twelve years old? You are very accomplished, ma petite chere.
IM: Thank you! But I know that you had done a lot at my age, too.
EVL: Oh, merci. Yes, when I was 12 I returned to the place of my birth—Paris, the city of lights. Only it wasn’t called the “city of lights” at that time. It was 1767, so there was no electricity, naturellement!
IM: My friend Charlotte lived in Paris, too! What did you do when you got there?
EVL: Oh, many things. First I studied art under my father. He was a portrait painter as well, you know. I started out painting portraits of my family, for practice. When I was skilled enough, I began painting royalty and other important people in my country.
IM: I bet it took a lot of work to get so good at painting.
EVL:Oui, ma chere. Very much work. I spent many hours painting before I was able to do it as well as I wanted.
IM: And you were pretty famous, right? What was the best part about being an 18th century celebrity?
EVL: Certainly it was the many exciting people I was able to meet. In fact, one of my very dearest amies was the queen of France, Marie Antoinette.
IM: Oh my gosh! You were BFF with the queen?
EVL: Yes, she was a very good friend. I even painted her portrait.
IM: So of all the incredible things that you did, what are you most proud of?
EVL: I would say I am most proud of my admission into the Académie Royale de Peinture et de Sculpture. In my day, every French artist wanted to be a member. It was like a special club for artists! Of course in those days they did not admit very many women, so I when I was accepted I felt that it was a great accomplishment.
IM: It certainly was! You’re an inspiration to female artists today—like me!
EVL:Merci, ma chere. I know one day you will be great artist too. Au revoir!
IM: Adios! Oops, I mean, au revoir!
