Winter Skin Woes!

Hola Chicas,

You know, I don’t get them too often, but when I do get, well, you know, a ZIT, it’s like the (dun-dun-DAH!) end of the world. Luckily, Elena Maria has been sharing some tips with me on how to keep my skin clean, clear, and looking fresh.

She says the important thing is to know works for your skin type.  Everyone has her own skin type—it can either be dry, oily, or normal.  Mine is dry, so you can imagine what it looks like in the winter—itchy, flaky city!

If your face feels tight, rough, or itchy, you probably have dry skin. Sometimes, you might even have little white spots or cracked skin—eeek! Most people have dry skin because the oil glands—small glands under the skin’s surface that we all have—do not produce enough oil to keep the face hydrated. And, in the wintertime, drastic changes in temperature (like, going into an overheated room after being outside in below-freezing temps!) can wreak havoc on your skin and just plain make things worse.

DO…

•    Drink lots of water to hydrate your skin from the INSIDE out.

•    Apply a thick, oil-free moisturizer after washing your face (the lotion is most effective when your skin is still damp ‘cause it’ll lock in some of the water!).

•    Gently wash your face using your fingers or a soft towel. Scrubbing it with a wash cloth or shower puffs can irritate your skin and cause breakouts.

•    Use face and lip products that contain soothing, natural ingredients like aloe, chamomile, and oatmeal for a bit of nature’s remedy for dry skin.

DON’T…

•    Wash your face more than twice a day—more washing equals more dryness!

•    Use harsh exfoliaters and face scrubs that can strip away your natural moisture.

•    Go overboard with hot showers—the scalding water can actually make your dry skin worse.

•    Leave your face uncovered when facing the whipping, icy winds of winter. And, keep in mind that going from one extreme (below-freezing temps) to another (overheated rooms) can wreak serious havoc on dry skin!

you tell us ...
How do you keep YOUR dry skin moisturized during winter?

Later,

I usually drink LOTS of water during the day, here's an easy way to keep track. OK, get a water bottle and fill it up to a little line marked '20'. Then, get three rubber bands, and put them around the outside of the bottle. Once you drink one full bottle, take of one rubber band and refill. By the end of the day, try to drink three bottles of water.

Well, sometimes I have bags under my eyes, but I've found that wearing glasses will hide them. Other than that, maybe you could try carefully applying coverup (like the stuff you use to hide pimples.)

Dear Isabel,

I have always had good skin but then this little red mark appeared... it wasn't a pimple or acne, just kinda red. I was freaked out because it felt like everyone was staring at it but truthfully it was hardly noticeable. My advice: Even though it may seem like the end of the world it's not because it will clear up in a few days... and if it doesn't you can always go to a dermitologist for help. Also, if you touch it a lot then it will irritate the skin and then people WILL notice it... but only if YOU draw attention to it.

Well said, Kaija1997! I use lotion too. If I don't use it, my mom goes, "Tsk, tsk..." and slathers it all over my skin. I usually only remember when I am in bed, and that is not so good because then my arms start to stick to my sheets! I am so glad Spring is coming- no more dry skin!

Weird-but-true facts/skin tips: 1.If you stress out a lot, you will get zits. 2.If you eat dairy products, your zits will go away. 3.If you dip a cotton ball into milk and rub it on your face, your skin will be smoother. 4.To get rid of a zit without having to go to a drugstore and buy creams, dab a little honey on your face, leave it there for as long as you can, then wash it off. 5.Steam is good for your skin, so take a hot shower. 6.If you're sunburned, use aloe vera gel.

winter skin can drive anyone loco, but these tips r excellent! (i'll have to download them on my computer)
luckily, i have skin that is considered 'normal': aka i got the occasional zits and pimples like everyone else, but i don't really have to freak out about skin conditions. but i say to use eucerin lotion! my mom buys it all the time and it reely works! (it does keep skin in check, no lie) you can buy them almost everywhere, so mabye some of you guys should test it out.(sue me if it doesn't work. LOL)-geminichik

You're so lucky about your skin! Good tips, too.

Oh, this is an awesome topic! When my skin's feeling flakey or dry or wierd like, what I'll do is kinda unique. Run a super-duper hot bath, and put either bubble bath, or a sweet smell like lavender, rose, sage, vanilla, or daisy. Wash your hair normally. Then, while the shampoo is sitting, read or watch T.V. (if you have a T.V. in your bathroom! ;-) Rinse off, and then when you get out, rub lotion all over. It'll feel good, but make sure the smell of the lotion doesn't clash with the smell of the bath!! Now you'll have soft skin and sweet-smelling skin! This remedy works every time. Write back Isabel!!

1. If your lips are very chapped, medicated or flavored lip balm can hurt. Try putting vasaline (the clearish yellow gel kind) on your lips.
2. Don't eat junk food or sugar. People say that the "Chocolate Gives you zits" thing is a myth, but sugar actually does make your skin break out.
3. Drink lots of water!
4. Try to get natural face scrub or soap instead of the kind with lots of chemicals.
5. If your hair gets super frizzy during the winter (like mine), don't wash it everyday, just every other day.
6.If your zits are really bothering you, and nothing works, get the medicine. I think that the cream is better than those wet face wipe pads!
Hope this helped!

I have eczema so it can be hard to take care of my skin. (eczema makes you always have a rash that is super itchy!)
I carry a chap stick with me everywhere, put on aloe gel, and try not to itch my face.
Also I put on zapzit cream and it works!
P.S. Have you ever gotten aloe out of the actual plant? It's so cool... you squeeze it and the gel comes out! It works on dry skin, sunburn, and mosquito bites!

Whoa that's really cool!

I had never moistorized my skin before really, but for christmas got a bottle of moistorizer lotion. Heres the thing- it was generic. My skin really reacted.

heres the lesson- don't use generic brands no matter how much of a tight budget you're on.

Yeah, and testing even like more expensive stuff is important too. My mom always makes me put a little dab of whatever new stuff I bought on my arm for a few hours and see how my skin reacts before I smear it all over me. It's kind of annoying, but I've definitely avoided some seriously bad skin situations that way!

Hola Happyluckythingylover! Try a lotion with oatmeal or oatmeal extract in it...it really helps my hands in winter! But make sure you're not allergic to it first--that would be NO fun!

I have what you call normal skin.
It probly sounds nice but if I dont moisturize my skin enough it gets really dry and itchy and when I get to much moisture it gets so oily. Some times I get really confused about my skin.

Ugh, that does sound confusing! Katani told me (she's kind of the BSG expert on lookin' good) that you can try putting moisturizer just on the parts of your face that get dry, like your cheeks, and skip it on the rest. Hope that helps!
