The Children's Bilingual Theater
Check out this muy guay recipe: take Cinderella and put her in a modern school. Combine a little salsa and hip-hop music and mix it with some Spanish and English dialogue. What do you get? Well, you’ve got the latest play performed by The Children’s Bilingual Theater, a nonprofit organization that brings together English-speaking kids learning Spanish and Spanish-speaking kids learning English. How cool is that? The founder of the award-winning Children’s Bilingual Theater (CBT) is 14-year-old Jordan Schwartz from Georgia. In 2003, Jordan realized that she could combine her two loves—Spanish and community theater—to create a FUN way for people to practice English and Spanish. Plus, CBT shares a little Spanish culture with its audiences—¡qué bien!
CBT has put on many productions, including a Suessical Extravaganza (see photos), and has grown from 17 volunteers to 100 since their first performance, called The Song of the Oak/El Canto del Roble. Up next is a play called Esperanza Rising, which is about immigration.Jordan is making a big difference in the lives of English speakers, Spanish speakers, and speakers of both (like me)! Read my chat with Jordan about her AWESOME community theater program! For more information about Jordan and The Children’s Bilingual Theater, log on to childrensbilingualtheater.org.
