A Talkative Girl Gets Tongue-Tied

Okay, so why is it that I talk up a storm with Charlotte, Isabel, Avery, and Maeve, but when it comes to talking to boys… I feel like I have nothing to say! We had this dance a few weeks ago and an eighth-grader asked me if I wanted to dance with him! Yay! He seemed pretty cool at the dance, and I kind of want to get to know him better as a friend. But, whenever we see each other in the halls, it’s like “Hi.” And that’s it!

I need some help, ladies. I need some tips on talking to crushes—and I’m sure I’m not alone!

Sometimes, just talking to boys gives me the heebie-jeebies! How do you get over being totally scared to talk to a crush?

Hey girl. First, you're so not lame. I mean, you would just being honest, and that guy totally took advantage of that. Second, the way to get people to stop talking is to just ignore what people are saying. You can set people straight a couple of times, but if you say it too much it can sound defensive. After a while, stuff like this just fades away and people forget about it. So play it cool and remember that you didn't do anything wrong. But in the future, you might want to have heart-to-heart conversations in person, instead of on paper, just in case.

Hey first, ur sooo not alone. anyway, my tips r just b urself, b fore u talk 2 hom, make sure 2 calm urself down, ask him casual questions that'll get him talking a bit more. example: that math test was kinda hrd do you think? questions like that. and maybe you could invite him over 2 ur house sometime. OK, first of all, you're sooooo not pathetic. I asked my older sister Patrice about it, and she says this kind of stuff happens to her friends all the time. Like, you think you like a guy, but then you find out that you don't. You should definitely have an honest conversation with your bf and see how he feels. It's hard to say things that you know are going to hurt somebody's feelings, but it's even worse to stay with him when you know you don't like him like that.

It's so mean that people call him names! Totally not cool. Just let your bf know that you're there for him. It's important to be a good friend to him on top of being his gf. And try to forget what people say about him or you - I mean, really, who cares what they think?

This sounds like serious discussion material for you and your parents. But I think if you act mature about it and ask them for a special time to talk about it, they'll probably be impressed by how you came to ask them first. I can't promise they'll say yes, but at least you'll be off to a good start!

My mom told me this cool trick: you can write a letter that says all your feelings about something that's bothering you, but then never send it to the person you wrote it for. So you end up still feeling better because you got it all out but you don't have to put all your feelings out there. Try that!

First take a deep breath, girlfriend! I know it feels bad when a guy says he doesn't like you, but you can't let it get to your confidence. Think back to how you guys used to talk . What kind of things did you talk about? Try chatting with him like one of your friends, and maybe things will get back to normal between you and him.

Cool! Yeah, it's not like the nervousness stops after you ask someone out. My older sisters tell me that you have to wait a while before you really feel comfortable with a guy to just talk about anything. You can help your crush talk a bit more by starting conversations with HIM. Show him that you're not so scary to talk to, you know?
