As a budding CEO of a major fashion and advice company, I take school pretty seriously. That’s why I’m always on the lookout for people copying my paper or cutting and pasting book reports off the Internet.
Don’t get me wrong—I’m not a tattletale. I just want to make sure that the label “CHEATER” never, ever gets near the name “KATANI.” You dig?
But, cheating isn’t always black-and-white. There are some gray areas in cheating, and I’ve got them spelled out here plus advice on what to do about them!
“Katani, come on! Just let me copy your paper. I’ll never ask again, I promise!”
How many of you have heard THAT before? Uh-huh. Just what I thought. This situation is hard because you want to help out your friend, but you also don’t want to be a cheater! The problem is that once you say “yes” to one friend, it’ll be super hard to say “no” to her AND your other friends in the future. We’ve all been there with forgetting homework assignments, and we all know it’s not the end of the world if you miss one. Say something like, “I’d love to help you out, but I just don’t feel comfortable giving you the answers.” Remember, sharing your paper not only makes her a cheater, it makes you one, too.
“My book report is due tomorrow! Can’t I just copy this summary online?!”
Yikes! Even the most organized girls (like me!) get into a due-date jam sometimes. And when you realize you’re going to have to work super hard and super fast to get it done, it seems pretty tempting to just copy and paste something off the Internet. But, that’s cheating—bad cheating. Copying someone else’s work on the Internet—or even copying from your own sister’s work—is called plagiarism, and it’ll get you in big trouble for sure. So, how do you take info off the web to use in your essay? Use many books or sites to pile all your information together and summarize it in your own words.
“I swear I studied for this test! I just need to peek at someone’s paper for the answer…”
Stop! Hold it right there. Just like above, I think we’ve all been here, and it takes a LOT of holding back not to look at your neighbor’s paper during a test. But, you know, and I know you know, that this is the most dangerous form of cheating. Why? Because your teacher can clearly see if your eyes are drifting off toward someone else’s test. Plus, you might make that person super mad if he/she found out you were cheating off them. Instead of peeking, close your eyes, count to five, and try to focus and remember what you studied. Honest grades feel a LOT better than dishonest grades!
