Organization 101
Being organized with schoolwork and especially your room is not easy! I always keep a planner with me so I can write down all my homework and important stuff coming up, like going to one of Avery’s games or a deadline for the Sentinel. Here are some tips on how to stay organized in junior high! Use a Planner: Having a planner is like having a good pair of jeans—ESSENTIAL! A planner is available in all sorts of fun colors and designs at most office supply stores. When choosing a planner, make sure you look inside because many of them are different. The best ones have views of an entire month as well as spaces for every day to write in homework and other stuff you have to do. Keeping a planner is important because it helps you keep track of homework assignments and important dates. Keep Your Backpack Neat: When your backpack is neat and organized, it’s easy to find things without dumping everything on the floor! I keep my planner, books I need, spiral-bound notebooks for each class, and a special homework folder in my backpack. Another good idea is to keep extra pens, pencils, and erasers in a small pocket of your backpack for when you need them—fast. Kgirl tip: keep a small mirror, lip gloss, extra hair elastics, and tissues for beauty emergencies! Organize your Homework Zone: OK, so doing homework in front of the TV or in the kitchen just does NOT work for me. So, I picked a quiet spot and made it my Homework Zone. A Homework Zone should have a flat surface to write on, a comfy chair, and extra school supplies. I made my Homework Zone really cute by taking a bulletin board and stapling some colorful fabric to it. I keep fun pictures on my Kgirl original bulletin board —as well as contact info for classmates in case I have a question! Make a Study Plan: I get real busy after school with activities and family stuff, but I try hard to do my homework as SOON as I get home while school is still on the brain. I call this my study plan. I do my homework AND look in my planner for long-term projects and tests—to avoid cramming at the last minute! Then I can go hang out with my friends or watch TV before dinner. I stick to my schedule even on days when I don’t feel like doing my work right away. Create a To-Do List: Keeping a to-do list for school and for things I need is also a good way to stay organized. I keep a list at home for personal things I might need, and that goes in my Homework Zone. I keep the list my planner, and also include things like permission slips and stuff I have to pass in. To-do lists are so important at school and at home. One day, I needed to go get some things at Fabric World, and the day I didn’t bring my to-do list, I forgot to get thread! I will never go with out a list again! Give Yourself a Reward: Staying organized isn’t all hard work; being on top of your schoolwork allows you to have more free time. Staying organized helps me get good grades and when I do I treat myself to something special. Hot chocolate with whip cream at Montoya’s or a few yards of fancy fabric at Fabric World are some of my favorite rewards!
