When Friends and Sibs Collide

Hey girls!

My older sister Kelley is really special to me. She is one of the funniest and most honest people I know, no question. But, Kelley has autism, so it’s harder for her to know when the BSG and I need some quality BFF time and leave us alone.

It’s part of who she is, and I wouldn’t change her for the world, but sometimes she can be sooo frustrating! And you know what? Autism isn’t fully to blame—I bet tons of girls out there have siblings who like to be included in private friend stuff. I mean, I’m glad Kelley likes my friends, but they’re MY friends. Sometimes, I just want to be with them on my own, without my sister following us around.

And then I have the opposite problem with my other sister, Patrice. She’s in high school, and she sometimes acts like she OWNS our house. Like she’ll come into the room where the BSG and I are chilling and totally kick us out! Hey, other people live here too, Miss High School Attitude.

So what’s the Kgirl solution? Let it go, and then talk it out. It’s not easy, but when Kelley or Patrice make me really annoyed while my friends are around, I try to just let it go for the moment and talk to them about it later, in private. That way nobody’s feelings get hurt.

you tell us ...

It's like siblings always have a knack for interrupting quality BFF time. How do you deal?

i understand u i am the youngest i dont have any fun but mi big sis is mi best friend but sometimes she changes on me i dont know wat to do

Yeah, it seems like big sisters are nice to you one minute and then completely ignore you the next! What's up with that? You should try asking her for some quality sis-to-sis time every now and then. I think that's what I'm going to try with Patrice.

Hey Katani,
I know exactly how that feels (I am the oldest btw), but luckily I have found a great system to let everyone feel included and leave some private time for myself too. Normally when one of my friends gets dropped off, my mom talks to her mom for a while. During this time, my friend and I normally stay and talk with the grownups and the rest of the family. When my friend's mom leaves I always ask my friend what she wants to do, I recommend a board game or something like that. I ask if it would be okay if one of my siblings joins us. The more the merrier when it comes to board games. After we play a game, we normally head to my room to talk or play other games by ourself. Sometimes my youngest sibling would like attention. My friends don't have any problem giving her that, which is perfect. Since younger kids have short attention spans, just a little bit of attention is needed to cure their desire to be with you. I use this almost every time i have friends over. It works really well because everyone is included at least once and my friends benefit from having them around. I get to have some time to myself with my friends in between. Besides, I know that next time my siblings have friends over that they will let me in on their fun as well. siblings can help cure that boring don't know what to do time.
Hope this helps! smilies/smiley.gif

P.S.
Bored: siblings can help fix that boring don't know what to do time.....they will do anything to entertain you or help you think of something fun smilies/smiley.gif

Hey girl, those suggestions are great! I'm so gonna use that board game advice next time.

Maybe try spending some great quality time with you're sisters when you aren't with you're friends. THen find something for them to do when you are with friends. That way they will stay busy. When you're friends are gone spend some more time with you're sisters. Hope it helps! smilies/smiley.gif

I know how you feel. I have younger sibblings too. One is always following me around and the other is just plain rude to me. The way I deal with it is by ignoring them and then talking to my parents about it later. It really helps. smilies/wink.gif

Ya. Just walk away. If you tell your parents they will end up calling you a tattle tale. That would be worse.
