Nik & Sam I

Have you guys heard of Nik and Sam? They’re up-and-coming singer/songwriters from Arkansas. So young – and so talented!!! Here are the questions that I asked them on behalf of Club BSG.


Maeve Kaplan-Taylor: How do you come up with the ideas for your songs?

Nik & Sam: We might experience something, for example, at school and write about it. Sometimes we get into what we call a “song bubble” which means basically we get in an imaginary zone and kick around ideas we have. We may come out with a song or just a part of one.


MKT: Do you girls share a room?

N&S: No, luckily we have our own rooms. Sam’s room is lime green and Nikki’s room is purple.


MKT: Love the color choices! What is it like to live on a farm?

N&S: We have a blast living on a farm and riding our horses and four wheelers, but it is a big responsibility to feed all of our animals. They depend on us to survive.


MKT: Do you have a favorite horse? What is his or her name?

N&S: We each have our own personal horse. Nikki’s horse is named Primer. He looks like he’s been spray painted but looks good. Sam’s horse is named Joe. He is a sorrel (brown) quarter horse and his full name is Royal King Joe Tom.


MKT: What do you like to do when you are not making music?

N&S: We like to play outdoors, go shopping, watch movies, swim and just be creative.


MKT: Who is your Hollywood crush?

N&S: We really think that Matthew McConaughey and Heath Ledger are soooo cute.


MKT: Do you ever fight with each other?

N&S: Sometimes, but we make up really fast because we are inseparable.


MKT: That’s cool. I’ve always wondered what it might be like to have a twin, but I don’t think the world is big enough for two of moi! How did you get into bluegrass music?

N&S: We used to go to gatherings with our parents and there were always bluegrass pickers. My dad would always play with them. That’s how we got started.


MKT: Who inspired you?

N&S: First of all our dad inspired us. Sam loved the Dixie Chicks’ banjo player, Emily Robison, so she wanted to learn the banjo. Nikki learned the guitar so she could accompany Sam and also Natalie Maines from the Dixie Chicks inspired her because of her singing and guitar playing.


MKT: Do you think you'll make a movie?

N&S: Yes, we would love to if we get a chance.


MKT: I hope there’s a part for me in that movie! What are your favorite movies?

N&S: Our favorite movies are The Notebook, Anne of Green Gables and War of the Worlds.


MKT: Who are your favorite bands or singers?

N&S: You probably can already tell we like the Dixie Chicks. We like such a variety of music. It ranges from John Mayer to Alison Krauss to Fleetwood Mac.


MKT: Do you have an all-time favorite song?

N&S: There are so many songs we love, that is a hard question. One of Nikki’s favorite songs is Daughters from John Mayer.
