hey maeve i go to a drama camp every summer and i've put on two plays and im sure you would love them. the 1st is called "room service... its murder" which i played a maid who gets murdered. and then theres "virtual". its a play where four friends fight over a dvd player a mysterious old woman gave them and they get suck into the dvd player into the tv. they get caught in lord of the rings, grease (which we watched 5 times at the camp), alice in wonderland and harry potter. i played the rabbit from alice and hermione. i did set and it was fun
I am in my school musical, but I have a tiny unimportant part. It is hard watching the girl who got the part I wanted rehearse. I take a drama class, so if I had that part the director wouldn't be directed me as much as he directs her. It just isn't fair.

Oh, again, I've have this problem before. My neighbor was only 7 yrs old, and I 10. I went over to her house, and she had a 14 year old brother, and he was totally sweet. Well, the issue I run into with my parents is that they're afraid I won't have time to do other things if I'm always acting (like homework, spending time with family, doing non-acting-related stuff). So, maybe that's what your 'rents are afraid of. Just do the best you possibly can at what you're doing now, and maybe soon your parents will think about letting you do more :-)

Congrats on getting the part! I bet "Romeo" is just as nervous as you are about the kissing scene, so maybe get all the awkwardness out of the way by admitting that you're pretty scared about it. Just be like, "Yeah, so you know that kiss? I'm kind of nervous about it... how should we do this so that it doesn't look awkward on stage?" You don't have to be a pro at kissing! And, if it really makes you feel uncomfortable, talk to your drama instructor about it. Break a leg!

Believe it or not, sometimes the most IRRITATING drama teachers are the ones you learn from the most. Really -- remember that this drama instructor can teach you a lot. And, let me tell you, drama teachers do NOT love prima donnas -- or, girls who think they know better -- so, keep that in mind and good luck in the show!

Dyslexia is hard to deal with, and I can see how you feel like it is holding you back. It's frustrating sometimes! But, if you have your goals set on NOT letting it hold you back, it makes you a stronger person. Why? Because overcoming issues like dyslexia makes you ready to overcome other difficult challenges in life -- which is a GREAT quality. I try to look at the silver lining of my learning disability -- I hope you find it, too!

Hi! Sometimes I do get embarrassed when I misspell a word, but then I realize that I'm doing the best I can, and there's nothing wrong with that. A lot of people laugh at others who make mistakes because they are secretly glad that it wasn't them who made the mistake. Sometimes, you can nicely remind them how THEY might feel if people laughed at THEIR mistakes!
flickchick1313, you should try to meet in the middle. Example- You ask your mom if you can go to the dance. She says "Hun, your just to young. Maybe next year." You say: "Mom, I've tried to show you that I am responisble enough to go to the dance. But it your decision and I respect it. But the next time there is like a group-date or something- can I go?" Well, telling her flat-out that you're not her friend may hurt her feelings. Instead, remember that not ALL your friends have to be BFFs. You can be friends with her in school or in after-school clubs and stuff without doing sleepovers and things like that :-)

Yikes! No one likes an attention-hogger for very long. I wonder why she'd get mad at you for talking to a boy she says she doesn't like! There is a simple solution to that problem: ask her WHY it bothers her when you talk to him. As for hogging all the attention with your friends, don't let her keep you from expressing yourself. You don't have to be mean. Say something like, "Could you hold on with that thought for a minute? I really want to say something important to everyone." Keep in mind that even though she likes to be the star of the group, it doesn't mean you're any less important to your BFFs.

I have trouble in school sometimes, too, because of my dyslexia. But, I do know that asking for help from my teachers and parents goes a long way. They can take me through whatever we're studying step-by-step -- and at a slower pace than what we do in class. Plus, it shows a lot of EFFORT, which is key in school success.

Ugh! You know, that happens to me sometimes. Like, if I have to write something on the board, I know that my dyslexia will cause me to make mistakes. It's very frustrating at times. I can feel my face get all red, and sometimes I want to cry! But, what those kids don't know is that your dyslexia is making you stronger and STRONGER every day. I know I have to work harder than the other kids, but that just means that I'll have hard-working skills for the rest of my life! And, whenever someone makes fun of me, I think to myself: "You know what, I've got a thick skin, and no one can make me feel bad about something I can't change." In the meantime, make sure you talk to your parents about how you're feelings. It's VERY important not to let these things get all bottled up inside!

Keep in mind that there really is NO shame in telling a teacher or a parent about what is going on. So, if these girls are pulling nasty pranks on you, it's time to 'fess up.
Also, remember that these girls do things to get reactions out of people. So, don't give them what they want. Instead, march right up to a teacher and explain what happened. Or, if they say something mean, come back with "Mmm-hmm, whatever!" Smile and walk away. It's important that they don't make a mean girl out of YOU -- even to them!
You should try ballet, Maeve. It's pretty awesome. Since I was 3 years old, I've been dancing ballet, and now I'm in the intermiediate level doing pointe! It's pretty fantabulous, realizing that one day you could be like Karen Kain, the famous ballerina. You get pretty flexible, so with the excersices it's like a more complicated and structered version of yoga! Jazz is great, too! Super fun. But I REALLY love musical theatre- at my dance camp during the summer, we learned the dances of High School Musical! Awesomely awesome!

Yup, there are a LOT of questions about things when you're our age, huh? I think if you're not, like, BFF with your mom, it might be a little awkward to talk about this stuff. But, the best answers to your questions usually come from people who have been there and who know you. Try writing your mom a note or bring it up in the car so that you're not, like, face-to-face. If you still feel afraid to talk to your mom, try the school nurse. She is soooo used to these kinds of questions, trust me. The bottom line is that the grown-up women in your life have the answers, and they can give you personalized advice based on you and your body. Good luck!

Wow! That must have caught you by surprise! If I were you, I'd definitely want to get to know the boy before I made any decisions. Like, maybe I'd ask him for his screen name or his email address just to chat. Or, I'd find places at school where I could get to know him better. Then, I'd probably run it by my mom to see how she feels about me calling boys. Some 'rents don't love the idea if they find out about it AFTER you do it. Whatever you do, remember that it's YOUR decision -- don't let anyone pressure you!

Actually, no. Awkwardness can happen with anyone... not just boys you like. I mean, you can definitely think a boy is cute and NOT have a crush on him. That might be the case here. Hmmm... it sounds like she's not ready to end the friendship. But, like I think you know, being mean to her is NOT the answer. That just makes you look bad. But, why end your friendship completely? Explain how you feel, and be persistent but sensitive to her feelings. That way, you don't end up not liking each other -- you can be more like casual friends :-)

First off, it is totally normal to feel scared about getting your first period. The best way to prepare is to talk to your mom or an older female you trust about it. She can give you advice and tell you exactly what to expect and exactly what to do.
Remember that ALL women are meant to get periods, and most deal with it without having it affect their daily lives. By talking to an older girl about the whole process who has been-there-done-that, I bet you'll feel a LOT better ;-)

It's totally normal to feel sad at a time like this. But, it is important to talk about your feelings with grown-ups. Talk to your mom or an adult you trust, and the two of you can come up with a plan of how to get through it together. You can think ahead of time what you'll do if you suddenly feel sad in school and in other places. No matter what, though, talking about your feelings is always better then keeping them bottled up inside.

Acting is really hard. I mean, you practice your lines 1,000 times, but when you perform, it has to sound REAL, like you're just talking, not reciting lines. Talk to your drama teacher at school or think about joining an acting class to get some tips from the pros!

Hi! I actually haven't seen Titanic yet because my dad says it's kind of a grown-up movie. That's OK with me because I like to watch happy movies more than sad ones! And Full House... let me just tell you that it is one of my FAVE shows of all time! I know they stopped making it, like 10 years ago, but I love how DJ, Stephanie, and Michelle all have a happy ending in EVERY show with Danny, Uncle Joey, Uncle Jesse, and Aunt Becky. Priceless!

In a few days my school is having auditions for the annual play, and I REALLY, REALLY want to try out, but i'm afraid. If you looked up stagefright in the dictionary, you'd find pandagirl. At a summer camp, I was in a play, but I didn't have any lines. I just sat there. There were only about 200 people there, and the plays have audiances of about 1000 people! Yikes! No problem, though. Prepare for secondary school by talking to kids who are already there to get a good feel for what the teachers are like and what the homework is like. Uh oh! This happens to a lot of girls. They think they have all the time in the world to do homework on vacay, but then stuff comes up and you have places to go and people to see. Before you know it, it's the night before school starts again! But, like my mom always says, I have to be responsible for my schoolwork. Hey, it's never too late to start! Like, I was watching So You Think You Can Dance last season and the winner, Sabra, said that she's only been dancing for four years! If you want to catch up to the girls who are at the top level, you have to practice, practice, and practice hard! But, keep in mind that it's usually more fun to learn something at your own pace and be proud of YOUR accomplishments.

Omigosh, EVERYONE feels weird about her voice. Or, well, at least I do. Like, when I listen to my voice mail recording on my cell, I'm like, "EW! Is that my voice?!?!" I read somewhere that your voice sounds different to you when you're speaking than it does to everyone else because of where your ears are... or whatever. So, it's pretty natural to think your voice sounds different on a recording. My advice: get a second opinion :-)

Well, purple is nice. I do LOVE pink, but I feel like purple is sometimes a nice change. It also compliments the color pink very well, too. So, I'd say that I don't love purple as much as pink, but it is up there on my list of colors.

Some people are just really intense about competition -- no matter if it's for a role in a play or for who is wearing the best outfit. But, it takes TWO to compete, so I'd say just to let it all roll off your back. Hopefully, she'll get the hint. If not, you can say something like, "Sometimes, you get really competitive in drama, and that makes it not really that fun for me." Good luck!

I've noticed that when it comes to singing, many people have natural talent and just as many don't. But, that doesn't mean we can't all sing like pros! Ask your mom if you can sign up for some voice lessons to get tips from a person who knows exactly how to get your beautiful voice to shine!

But, sometimes stylists, assistants, and other people who work behind-the-scenes in the BIZ. So, think about a career in the BIZ, and maybe you'll get to walk the red carpet someday!
Hi Maeve! I need advice! I am going to audition for The Wizard of Oz, but I have to be prepared with a song because it is a musical!! I never considered myself a great singer, and I can't find a good but easy song. I am thinking of a Christmas carol, like "Rudolph the Red-nosed Reindeer," but it has to be relatively easy to learn and sing and it has to show off a high voice (becuase singing high is what I'm good at!) Well, I think a good audition piece is one that shows that you've put time and effort into it and one that showcases your voice. So, whatever you feel does that for you, go for it!
I think all kinds of children all over the world should put there creative mind on writing, english ,math!!. Becuase thats more important that TV or video games. You know all of the children can do that stuff once they have done all of the learning. All children have to be learing so they can have a bright future and not a dark one

Hmmm... I think you should tell your friend how you feel about her telling your secret. It's not a very BFF-ish thing to do to tell each other's secrets without permission. If you're too embarrassed to talk to your crush, keep in mind that by laying low and keeping your head held high, the whole situation will blow over and something else will be the topic of conversation!

Making new friends can be fun! Think about what qualities you like in a friend, and try to bring those out of yourself as much as possible. Smiling, laughing, and being friendly are always good ways to be when you're trying to make friends. Real friends will like you for who you ARE... so pretending to be someone else or letting people take advantage of you in one way or another is not the way to get real friends. Dear Maeve, I have a problem. Our class has the privilege of using computers. We only have four, and my best friend is either using a computer, or begging and whining for one. It's SOOOO annoying! She is a total computer hog, and she never lets anyone else use one after her. She could be doing something else. She does it every day, and it annoys everyone. We have a half-hour limit for using computers, and she uses computers for over an hour sometimes. HELP MAEVE, PLEASSSSSSSSE save our class and H-E-L-P!!!!!!
Oh no! Attack of the computer HOG! This is something that you need to talk to your teacher about in private. Stay after school or come in early from recess and tell her that you feel like she's dominating all the computer time and not letting everyone else take a turn. Your teacher can put a stop to it!
