Flicks about Furry Friends
As much as I love a good romance movie, there’s just something about a movie with cute little puppies and kitties embarking on dangerous adventures that tugs at my heartstrings! Animal movies are the best because no matter what, the animals always manage to put a smile on my face. Here are some of my all-time favorite animal movies: Homeward Bound: The Incredible Journey (1993) Starring: voices of Michael J. Fox, Sally Field, Don Ameche Rated G Three pets–a spunky bulldog named Chance, a wise old golden retriever named Shadow, and a Himalayan cat named Sassy who lives up to her name–are left alone while their family goes on vacation. They don’t know where their owners have gone and want to get back to them! The pets don’t get along too well, but they learn that they have to team up and work together if they want to get back to their family. Flikchic rating: 7 out of 10 – Chance, Shadow, and Sassy get into all kinds of scrapes and meet up with tons of different animals. My favorite part is when Chance tries to catch a porcupine–but only gets its quills! Ouch! ********** Babe (1995) Starring: voices of Christine Cavanaugh, Miriam Margolyes, Hugo Weaving Rated G Yes, I’m talking about the little pig with the great big heart who learns how to herd sheep! With the help of his adopted Border Collie mom, Babe learns how to herd sheep, but will they let him compete in the local sheep-herding contest? Flikchic rating: 10 out of 10 – normally, I simply can’t stand mice, but the little singing mice in this movie are too cute not to love! ********** Fly Away Home (1996) Starring: Jeff Daniels, Anna Paquin Rated PG A girl named Amy finds some goose eggs in a marsh that’s being mowed down by developers. She takes them home, but when they hatch, the baby geese imprint on her–meaning that they think she is their mother! They follow her everywhere! But cold weather is approaching, and the geese have to learn how to fly south for the winter. Amy and her dad build a tiny, ultra-light airplane, but can Amy lead the geese successfully? Flikchic rating: 8 out of 10 – Amy is totally awesome for teaching her geese how to fly south for the winter, but my all time favorite character is Igor, the goose with the twisted foot. Even though he had trouble walking and flying, he never gave up! ********** Charlotte’s Web (2006) Starring: Dakota Fanning, voices of Julia Roberts, Steve Buscemi Rated G Wilbur the pig just knows he’ll turn into pork chops unless he does something fast, but what can a pig do? Fortunately, he becomes friends with a smart spider named Charlotte. How can one little spider save a pig’s life? You’ll have to watch and find out! Flikchic rating: 10 out of 10 – This is Charlotte’s favorite movie too, and not just because she has the same name as the title character, either! Just like Charlotte the BSG, Charlotte the spider is a total Word Nerd too! ********** Because of Winn-Dixie (2005) Starring: Jeff Daniels, AnnaSophia Robb Rated PG When Opal finds a dirty old dog in a convenience store and names him Winn-Dixie, nobody wants her to keep him -– not her father, not the landlord, nobody! But Winn-Dixie finds his way into everyone’s hearts! And how could he not? He’s just so cute! Flikchic rating: 9 out of 10 – the story of how Opal found Winn-Dixie is almost like the story of how the BSG and I found Marty! ********** Dreamer: Inspired by a True Story (2005) Starring: Kurt Russell, Dakota Fanning Rated PG The very best thing about this movie is that it’s based on a true story! A girl named Cale befriends a racehorse named Soñador, but when Soñador breaks her leg, the vets want to have her put down! Cale’s father buys Soñador and puts her in a special cast and harness. Her leg heals, but will she ever be able to race again? Flikchic rating: 8 out of 10 – When Cale first meets Soñador, she wins her over by feeding her popsicles! That would win me over any day!
