Fun, Fearless, Halloween Flicks!

Hey there, festive movie-watchers!  Halloween is right around the corner, so I picked some fun—not scary—movies that the BSG love to watch! If you don’t like guts and goriness (like me!), you will love these flicks!

*Love to act? Check out our Drama Tower Club!*

Hocus Pocus
(1993) Starring: Bette Midler, Sarah Jessica Parker, and Kathy Najimy
Rated: PG

What’s it all about?

It all starts when a boy named Max in Salem, Massachusetts, lights a candle that he found in an old house on Halloween night. Without knowing it, he brings back to life three witches who lived in the house 300 years ago! The witches (Winnie, Sarah, and Mary Sanderson) have to deal with modern-day stuff like riding around on vacuum cleaners instead of brooms!) while trying to track Max down—and it’s up to a talking cat to save him!

My review:
This is, without a doubt, my all-time favorite Halloween movie! It’s actually a musical, and Bette Midler plays one of the witches! She is one of the best actresses in Hollywood; she can sing AND act.  I love that it is so funny, and it has great songs. It also takes place in Salem, which isn’t far from Brookline (my hometown).  Watch this flick with friends, but don’t worry—it’s not too scary to watch alone either.

The Worst Witch

(1986) Starring: Fairuza Balk, Tim Curry, and Diana Rigg
Rated: G

What’s it all about?
A young witch named Mildred goes to an academy school just for witches to learn how to use her powers. She is always getting made fun of by her classmates because it seems like she can’t do anything right!  But, Mildred has to help save the school from the evil twin sister of the headmistress before the Grand Wizard comes to the academy!

My review:
This movie is so funny! It’s all about how hard junior high can be—even for a witch! Mildred is so clumsy and always messing everything up, but she really does mean well.  She’s so sweet, but she doesn’t get pushed around! She turns Ethel (the school’s Queen of Mean) into a pig! There are great songs too, like, “growing up isn’t easyyyy!” How true!

Casper

(1995) Starring: Christina Ricci, Bill Pullman, Eric Idle
Rated: PG

What’s it all about?

A girl named Kat goes to stay at haunted mansion called Whipstaff Manor with her ghost-busting Dad. It’s actually his JOB to help ghosts leave people’s houses! The owner of the house, a mean woman named Carrigan, desperately wants Kat’s dad to get rid of the ghosts so she can get to a buried treasure. While all this is going on, Kat befriends a nice ghost named Casper—who turns out to be more real than he appears to be.

My Review:

I love, love this movie! Kat is really cool and I like how she and Casper become good friends even though he’s a ghost and she’s a girl! It’s so funny when Casper’s uncles (who are also ghosts) try to stir up trouble at the mansion.  I also love the part where Kat throws a fabulous Halloween party for her classmates at Whipstaff Manor. Guess who crashes the party… Casper! But, he doesn’t look like your average ghost—he’s super cute!

The Twitches

(2005) Starring: Tia Mowery, Tamera Mowery, Patrick Fabian
Not rated

What’s it all about?

Alex and Camryn are twins separated at birth who reunite on their 21st birthday. Soon after, they discover that they are princesses from another dimension and that they have magical powers!  The girls also find out that their parents have died and they were left to be taken care of by servants of their parents.

My Review:

The girls who play the twins are Tia and Tamara from Sister, Sister. I love that show!  They are both so funny, especially when they discover they have magical powers.  They use their powers for good things by saving people from evil forces. And! They continue their “twitching” in Twitches Too, which aired on TV a few weeks ago!

Halloweentown High

(2004) Starring: Kimberly J. Brown, Lucas Grabeel, and Debbie Reynolds
Not rated

What’s it all about?
Marnie is a witch who wants to help bring together the witch world and the human world.  She plans to bring some student witches from Halloweentown High School to her high school for mortals (humans).  Marnie bets all of her magic that she can get the two united, and she has to do it before Halloween or else she will lose her magical powers.

My Review:

Marnie is so great; she speaks her mind and tries to get everyone to get along.  All the BSGs love to watch this movie and pretend that Abigail Adams Junior High is Halloweentown High! If you love this movie, there are not one, but TWO sequels, Halloweentown High II and Return to Halloweentown!
