It's Oscar Time!
Hello, dahhhhlings! It’s time to break out the popcorn and comfy PJs and settle in on the couch for one of my favorite nights of the year…Oscar night! This year is the EIGHTIETH time the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has handed out those little gold guys to all the brightest stars in Hollywood! Can you believe it? Sigh….one day you’ll see me up there. Don’t worry, I promise I’ll remember to thank all my BSG! *Love to act? Check out our Drama Tower Club!* Fabulous Facts about the Academy Awards: • The first Academy Awards ceremony was held in 1929, only a few years after the first movie with sound came out. • Tickets to the first ceremony cost $5. Today, you can’t even buy them—it’s totally invitation-only. • In 1940, the Los Angeles Times printed the winners’ names hours before the ceremony! After that, the Academy switched to using sealed envelopes that no one gets to read before the show. • The ceremony has only been postponed three times: in 1938 because of a flood, in 1968 because of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.’s assassination, and in 1981 because of President Reagan’s attempted assassination. • Ever wondered what that little statue is supposed to be? He’s a knight with a sword, standing on top of a film reel with five spokes. The spokes represent the first five Academy branches: Actors, Writers, Directors, Producers and Technicians. • For Snow White and the Seven Dwarves, Walt Disney was given one big Oscar statue and seven smaller ones. • It takes twelve people and twenty hours to make a single Oscar statue. • I can’t believe it: three people have turned down Oscars! Actors Marlon Brando and George C. Scott, and screenwriter Dudley Nichols all said “no thanks” to Oscar. *Make your OWN Oscar-worthy Beacon Street Girls MOVIE!* *Take my Movie Madness QUIZ!* *Solve my Maeve in the Movies PUZZLE!* *Read up on Oscar-winner -- and stunning beauty -- Grace Kelly!*
