Groundhog Day
There may be only one furry creature in the world more adorable than me, Mr. Martay. Nope, it’s not La Fanny – my favorite lady friend is not merely adorable, she’s beautiful! And it’s not Charlotte’s Parisian cat, Orangina, either. I have heard she is a lovely feline, but, let’s be honest, she doesn’t even come near the adorableness of myself. No, fellow BSG-lovers, I’m talking about my friend Punxsutawney Phil. Who’s he, you say? Well, Phil is a groundhog – but he’s no ordinary rodent. Every year, on February 2 (Groundhog Day!), a huge crowd gathers to watch this furry gentleman pop out of a hole on a hill called Gobbler’s Knob near Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania. So why all the interest in this one-hog show? If Phil sees his shadow, he scurries right back into that hole, because it means six more weeks of chilly winter weather are on the way. But if he DOESN’T see his shadow, he sticks around to hang out with all his fans, because spring is here! On top of being the world’s furriest meteorologist, Phil is also pretty much a celebrity. People have been counting on his forecast for over one hundred years. He’s even met the president and been on the Oprah Winfrey Show! And, he’s my personal favorite member of rodent-kind. So good luck again this year, Phil – we’re all counting on you! Five Things You Never Knew About Groundhogs • “Groundhog” and “Woodchuck” are actually both names for the same animal. Sneaky, Phil. Verrrrrrry sneaky. • Phil has TONS of furry cousins. Groundhogs are a type of marmot, which means they are rodents – along with mice, rats, guinea pigs, and porcupines. • Groundhogs are the biggest members of the squirrel family. • Groundhogs are herbivores, so they eat both meat and veggies – just like me! • Groundhogs usually hang out on the ground – duh – but they can also swim AND climb trees! Like, you know, if they really want to.
you tell us ...
Phil saw his shadow -- that means six more weeks of winter!
