Should You Tell Him?

girl_cellphone_240.jpgI know what you’re thinking: “I have a crush… should I tell him???” If you’re like me, you might spend hours, days, MONTHS agonizing over the pros, the cons, the consequences, and the risks. You’ve played out the scene in your head hundreds of times, but when it comes down to actually doing it, the right time never seems to come. Take my mini-quiz below and find out if you should take the plunge!  Or, spend a few minutes answering the questions on our new survey; it's all about boys and dating and stuff!

1. I have a crush on…
(a) a guy friend. We tell each other everything!
(b) a boy in my class who I talk to sometimes.
(c) a guy I’ve never actually met before.

2. He is soooo cute! But, what I also like about him is that…
(a) he tries hard in school and he’s nice to me and other people.
(b) he’s kind of shy, so he’s a little mysterious and cool.
(c) he’s super smart and everyone loves him.

3. I feel like maybe he likes me, too, because…
(a) he really listens me and we always have fun together.
(b) he kind of looks at me funny sometimes and smiles.
(c) we had to hold hands at an assembly, and I think he squeezed my hand!

4. My crush’s friends…
(a) are kind of like my friends, too. We can hang out and it’s totally cool.
(b) are kind of loud, but I don’t really know them.
(c) are not my friends. I don’t even know who they are!

5. My BFFs don’t know I like him. If they found out, they’d probably be like…
(a) “I knew it! You guys are always hanging out together!”
(b) “Cool! Since you only kinda know him, want me to go talk to him for you?”
(c) “Wow… he doesn’t even know your name. How will you get him to notice you?”



If you answered mostly A’s: You and this boy have a great thing going as friends, which is awesome! But, keep in mind that even if you both like each other, it doesn’t mean you HAVE to be bf/gf. Like, if one of you isn’t ready to be more than friends, things COULD get awkward for a while. But, if that’s a risk you’re willing to take, I’d say go for it!

If you answered mostly B’s: Ladies, this might be the beginning of a beautiful friendship. lol! Think about sending out the good-friend vibe first, rather than the crush vibe. Give him some time to get to know you (and you him)—otherwise, he might feel overwhelmed and totally surprised knowing you like him. In this situation, go with your gut!

If you answered mostly C’s: These crushes are sometimes the best because you get to daydream all day long about what he’s probably like and how sweet he would be if he found out you like him. In your head, he’s the perfect boy. But, in reality, he might not be right for you! Definitely get to know him as a friend first to see if you guys are cool as friends. If you’re not, it might be time to notice OTHER boys!

Bottom Line: Many girls have crushes that they keep secret, and that’s totally OK. Some girls and guys even have crushes on each other and never really admit it. That’s also OK. Don’t feel pressure to try to make your feelings into a bf/gf relationship before you’re ready.

Hey girl I am glad you talked it out with your friend and that is totally okay that she does not want to tell him yet. But just remember that you can do it and then just be there for her when she does it. Make sure that she gets that you will be there for her when she does it and you are not just ditching her! i have liked this boy for 2 years and on valentines day i asked her who she liked. she wouldnt tell. so then when i got home she said she liked the guy i like i could not breath. so on thursday we had a snow day. on friday i caught the flu. i had to call and see how school went. she said "oh my gosh! he said he liked me back!" but i thought he liked me so i was sad. now every day he first thing she says is "i love you" (to the boy) and i have to deal with it! HELP!!!!!

Ouch. This will sting for a while. It kinda makes you feel like YOU should have said something earlier, right? But, like my mom says, what's done is done. If you're really bothered by it, tell your friend that you liked him too and that you're going to do your best to be happy for her and support her. In the meantime, see if there's anyone else crushworthy to focus on!

Sometimes, I feel like even the boys who all the girls WANT to have as boyfriends aren't really great boyfriends. Does that make sense? Like, just because he's cute or whatever, it doesn't make him a nice guy or the guy for you right now. So, if you're not talking, try to fix that. If you're STILL not talking even after some effort, you might not be the best match.

Well, the good news is that this dance seems to be pretty far in the future, which means LOTS of time to figure this out. Whew! If you're cool with telling him you like him, talk to him and say you want to go to the dance with him, but only if he really wants to go with you. Add that it wouldn't mean that you're dating, it would just be two friends going to a dance 2gether.

Well, I haven't really told him.This is advice. Heres how he figured out.. and other of friends. Every Valentines Day, my class passes out valentine cards. And I was to obsessed with him, so I sort of put all these love stickers in his card , like "will you marry me" and "I love you" and "so cute" and.... well you get the idea. Tough stuff! Looks like calling or emailing him might be the only way to get in touch! Make sure he knows you have his phone number or email addy so that he's not caught off-guard, you know? Like, ask his friend to ask him if it's OK for you to get his email and send him a note. Or, ask him directly! Whichever you feel is the best way to go about it. Good luck!

I would just keep doing what you're doing! Focus on being confident in YOURSELF rather than comparing yourself to other girls in your class. All three of you are different, and not all boys like one type of girl, so trying to act like someone you're not won't get you anywhere. Good luck!

Sure! Like I said above, it's totally normal to have a crush and not want to be bf/gf. Sometimes guys (and girls) get embarrassed about bf/gf because they're afraid their friends will tease them or they're scared because they don't know what to do. So, even if he likes you, he might not be ready for bf/gf, and that's totally OK. I'd say to forget about the whole ask-out and get back to being good friends. Who knows what will happen down the road!

Hey my fellow BSG! I need advice! I'm in middle school, and I like this guy. He's one of my best guy friends, and I'm not sure if he likes me or not. In after-school, he comes and sits by me, and tries to make me laugh. When we are playing games in PE, he always passes the ball ( or gets me out of jail in capture the flag. ) And in cottilion ( did i spell that right? ) we had to dance together, and he held my hand tighter then usual. What do you think i should do? Should i tell him? Do you think he likes me? I really need some help here!

Again, I wish I had that crystal ball. It's hard to say for sure whether he likes you, but it's clear that he's noticed you! He sounds like a nice guy, so liking him should be exciting and not stressful! If you feel like you want to, tell him you like him or just that you love hanging out with him. And, if going out gets suggested by one of you, make sure it's what you both want so that your friendship doesn't suffer!

So, do your best to put him at ease by ignoring his blushes and laughing at his jokes. Think of it as a kind of compliment, but try not to act weird in return if you want to keep the cool friendship you have with him going.

Hey! That's great! If you were OK with that kiss, then there is nothing to feel bad about. Also, remember that being bf/gf means that you only like each other (and no one else) and that you love spending time together. So, just because you haven't SAID that you're bf/gf doesn't mean you're not. Does that make sense? If you like only him and he likes only you, and you've made that known to each other, then I'd say you're unofficially bf/gf.

Good point! Why is there a deadline? You're right, a lot can happen between now and then. Plus, when the end of school comes around, you might not have the opportunity that you've been waiting for to tell him. If you and your friend feel ready to do it now, I'd say go for it! But, if she's not ready, that doesn't mean you CAN'T do it. If you feel like it's the right time, round up your confidence and tell him!

One thing you could do is after school maybe if you know that he goes to your library to study or to like the fields at your school like any place around your school you could always go outside and see if he is there and if he is than that would be really a great spot to tell him and if there isnt his friends around than you should totally tell him there. Ok another option is look in your school directory or your towns phone book and look him up and call him! This might be like nerve city to do that but give it a shot! Also you could email him but its probably not the same as telling him in person or calling him. Whenever you feel like doing this is totally up to you! So whatever feels right! Hey! I'll take a crack at this, too. You make a good point about tricking your crush into finding out who he likes. It's not really nice to know someone's personal business by tricking them. I don't think it would be weird if you didn't go out with him because you can have a crush (and he can have a crush on you) and you can just get to know each other rather than being bf/gf right away. As far as never seeing him, do a little detective work. Does he hang out at the park after school? Does he love to go to the bakery down the street? See if you can accidentally "bump" into him somewhere -- but take the opportunity and say hi to him if you do!

This looks like a big conflict! I feel bad about the whole thing. So what you should do is either talk to your boyfriend in person or call him and just let it all out and ask him if he was going to breakup with you. I am SO sorry you had to find out like that! That's assuming it was true -- was it? If it was true, then it might be a good idea to take a week or so and reflect. Think about whether you liked being bf/gf with someone and whether you think it was worth the break-up. Then, think about this guy friend. Do you really like him, or are you just feeling like you want to be bf/gf with someone again? If you say yes to your guy friend, make sure you're doing it for the right reasons.

Well, normally, I'd be all, "be honest with him." But, telling someone you don't like them anymore can hurt feelings. Sometimes, it's best to just pull away a bit and see if he gets the hint. If not, you do need to be clear with him so that he is not confused.

If others judge you because of your clothes, then that's their problem. You just focus on YOU and what makes YOU feel confident. Like my mom always says, if she gave me everything I wanted, she wouldn't be doing me any favors in life.

Yikes! So, you have a guy friend and a crush. If you don't like your guy friend, going out with him will only make a huge mess for you later. Like, he'll find out that you don't really like him AND you'll be leading him on, so feelings will be even mroe hurt than if you had told him the truth from the get-go. I mean, if his friends came up to you and asked you the same question, wouldn't you feel iffy about telling your secrets to them? As far as asking about you, it doesn't definitely mean he likes or doesn't like you. But, you were on his mind, and whether he's a friend or a potential bf, that's always a good thing.

If you like him and you think he likes you, then I'd say get it all out in the open if you feel like you absolutely have to. Say something like, "You know, I don't want this convo to be weird, but I like you, and I kinda feel like you like me, too." If the convo goes badly, then try your hardest to get things back where they belong. It'll only mess up your friendship if both of you let it.

It's totally normal to feel uncomfortable around a guy. It's really only a problem if he makes you feel uncomfortable in a creepy or threatening way. You just have to get used to being around him. And, the only way to do that is to hang out as friends.

Well, keep in mind that going out isn't like getting married. So, even if a boy likes you, he might not want to "go out" with you, and that's OK. It's all about how he treats you when you're hanging out and stuff. If he's not treating you with respect 100 percent of the time, then it might be a good idea to tell him that you're feeling a little used.
