I’ve had my fair share of embarrassing moments, but I can usually chalk it up to being kind of a klutz. But today I had a different kind of embarrassing moment. I raised my hand to give an answer in Ms. Rodriguez’s class—and I was totally wrong! How embarrassing! I could feel my face turn red, and I’m pretty sure Ms. R noticed because she asked me to stay a few minutes after class. She explained that giving a wrong answer in class is nothing to be embarrassed about. It happens. She said she would much rather have someone raise her hand and give the wrong answer than not raise her hand at all. She said it’s all about confidence. I still felt pretty bad, though.
Confidence—that’s something I really want to work on this year at school. I know I do well on tests and essays and things like that, but I’m always hesitant to share my work with other kids. Sometimes, Ms. Rodriguez and my other teachers ask us to get up in front of the class to share something we’ve written. I always feel queasy before something like that—not only because I’m a total klutz, but I always think, what if people think my work is dumb? I know Anna and Joline—the reigning Queens of Mean—will snicker no matter what I do, but it always feels like a leap of faith when I share my work with others. I'll just have to practice taking that leap, won't I? Especially if I want to be a writer.

hi soccerGod, i don't know how i'm supposed to eat and sleep for the next two weeks. i have chemistry olympics basically every day, i'm sort of tutoring a good friend of mine in english as she's gonna fail english if she doesn't get a C on the next exam having had three Fs on the last ones and doing my other after-school activities and homework. help!!! i can eat while walking, but sleeping or stuff like that??? arghhhhh! that also means no middle ages festival for me tomorrow. my chemistry teacher sort of forces us to come to the chemistry lab tomorrow and from four o'clock on i'm gonna learn english with my friend. super! hi soccerGod, i'm glad you had fun! and that the food was good (at our school the food is always gross - except for the gartenfest, our yearly school festival)!^^ i was pretty busy this weekend. mostly i learned for latin and chemistry and i read lots of travel guides about paris (started at least), as we're gonna by a flat there, in which my father can live (he got a job at the esa in paris). we'll have to fly a lot through europe but going to paris once a month - my father is going to visit us on the other weekends - is going to be fun!!! i love doing culture trips and paris is one living museum!!!!!

hi soccerGod, i feel more sorry for you by the minute! but i don't exactly know any advice. we had a dance at our school last saturday, but i didn't go. i had two reasons not to: 1.) i can't dance (except for waltzing)!!!!!! 2.) who am i supposed to dance with? i would only have sat there being bored. i didn't go this year, but i'll probably go next year. i want to take a dancing class at "elmayer", vienna's best dancing school for classical dances. so next year i'll be prepared. have fun at your dance!!!!!

today was the last day of school before the Easter holidays. tomorrow we are flying to denmark for about a week (i'm not sure how long we're staying). but we do NOT have time to relax much. i have to learn for french, computer science, math, english and chemistry. for chemistry i have to learn a 1 1/2 page long list for identifying chemical substances. i have to learn that for chemistry olympics, which are really fun except for the learning-lists-by-heart part.

hi soccerGod, i live in austria, in the eastern part. we moved here 4 years ago from germany. there we lived near frankfurt, which has the biggest airport on the mainland of europe (london-heathrow is even bigger). every elementary school child (years 1-4) in germany has to learn all about this airport. it can really get on your nerves! =)

Hi soccerGod, Mette is Danish (i'm half German and half Danish). it's a more or less normal name in Denmark and is the name i would have if my parents hadn't decided for the name i have now. it was the first name that popped into my head for a username.
Yeah school been a boring thing for me this week, and i have to study for a test over the weekend, and just been hanging out. i used to go to this one school and i was so worried to raise my hand and say something in class because whenever you would say the wrong thing the teachers would put you down. but now im homeschooled and i learned that its OK to make mistakes because you can learn from them! and whenever i get a question wrong, i never forget the answer!

I KNOW!!! HOW U FEEL!!! to tell u the truth i am not good in math i usually get D's on test but for my math grade i get a B- which is not bad, anyways i know, this girl ask everyone what they got and she ask me and i said i only miss two and she like ha i got a better grade, and i was like u dont got to be so rude, and last year my friends went up to me and grab my piece of paper and look of my answer, and u wat i was like stop but all they did was give me attitude, I HATE IT I HATE IT!!!!!!! well at least i am not the only one
I do not like to share my work, 1. because it's embarrassing to read what I wrote, and 2, I always get tongue tied and I'll say the words wrong. #2 is really bad, because in our school play I have to recite the preamble to the constitution! (TONS of hard, long words!) But nobody's perfect, and when I said my part, everybody was clapping and saying, "Oh my gosh, how did you memorize that?" or "That was really good!" It makes me feel good to know that, even though I don't think I can read well, they do.

Everyone in my grade considers me really smart, always getting everything right. . . . once when the boy who sat next to me asked me a question about math, I told him, and well. . . . my answer wasn't quite--- OKAY. IT WAS TOTALLY WRONG!!!! Not only did I get it wrong, but I effected his grade- and, well. . . . just i hate that. Cuz everyone's always asking me questions, and I don't always have the right answers!! And something else I don't like is when you raise your hand to say something, and when the teacher call you- every single head in the class turns to stare at you. I mean, what the heck? I'm not gonna stand up and put on a show, I'm either giving an opinion or answering a question. They have ears, don't they?!?!?!?!?! Well, whatever. It's just weird because they still stare after you say what you had to say, and then you just casually look down. . . take a sip from your water bottle. . . . UGH.
I used to be that way too-never wanting to raise my hand and share my thought because I thought people would laugh at me. But now I don't care what other people think if I'm confident of my work. Also I used to be really nervous all the time, but now, because of all the public speaking I do, I'm ok! I'm so proud of myself, and so now, whenever one of my friends are feeling nervous about something, I help them.

One time, my teacher thought my paper was good, so she read it in front of the class. When somebody asked who it was written by, the teacher said I had written it, so everybody except my bestest friends stared at me. My cheeks felt flaming hot!
Dear purplerox7, I used to have the same problem in reading. I am an incredibly fast reader, too fast. I would read it so fast that no one could understand what I was saying.I fixed it by trying to read MY OWN books slower.(Anyway you undewrstand the book better that way.)So that way I was used to reading slow AND fast. So, my advice to you is to try reading and talking in front of big crowds. You could gather your family in a room and read something to them; this way your used to reading and speaking in front of people.Lots of luck, readingrules

Oh gosh we have that alike. And it shouldnt be that way. We should be happy with ourselves, but its hard. I'm afraid to raise my hand up in school and that my answer is wrong --so i dont do it. Or when i'm giving a oral report i'm scared --but i just have to do it. Sometimes when in class giving oral reports isnt obligated and its just to get some extra points I dont do it because i'm scared, even if i really needed those points. It stinks, its really bad. I shouldnt be like that! :/
It's OK to be like that -- it's a part of who you are. But, I think part of growing up is improving yourself, so just think of it as something to work on!
I don't really like to and i get nervous (well i guess i do for lots of stuff cuz i have an anxiety disorder but anyway) but i am willing to o and i always volounteer to go first cuz then i have it over and done with! :-)

Yes, it's true that it's a bit embarassing if your answer is wrong, but still. It's better to raise your hand often and give a wrong answer sometimes than to not raise your hand.
i think i'm a weird kinda person i don't like 2 talk much, but i'm not afraid 2 talk either it is hard 4 me 2 think of something 2 talk about, and when i do, i rumble on and on like an air head sometimes, there's nothing more challenging to speak in front of an audience, but sometimes i crave to do so (yes, i know, this sound confusing, but that is how i am) sometimes it is an instinct to go and introduce myself 2 others, but other times, i hide away from others (yes, this, too, sounds confusing, even 2 myself)

Sounds like you're a bit shy -- like me! Which is totally OK. When you enter a room, at first, do what makes you feel comfortable. Like, talk to a few close friends who you're not nervous around. Then, try to expand your comfort zone a little by talking to other people or by saying something to a large group of people. The more you do it, the more comfortable you'll feel. Good luck!
i'm the student council in my second period class here in middle school and i go to meetings so i can tell the class what's going on in school(dances,fund raisers,etc.)and i love doing it because it feels like being in charge, which is why i tend to be bossy at times...

Great point! Believe it or not, our teachers have other lives outside the school! Weird, I know! But, it's more fun for them if their students participate.
some times whene you'v had an emmbarising moment you feel lost like you dont belong there. well, being lost is just like finding somthing you wernt looking for. if you get in one of those problems, just remember somthing good can come out of it.
sometimes and sometimes not. i think when u have something u think is not rite, 2 good, 2 bad, 2 nerdy, whatev, sharing your stuff seems intimidating. I know thats how it is 4 me, i skipped a grade, so some kids already think i'm a stuck-up know-it-all. . i know im smart but that makes it a little harder 2 share my work. Like 1 time i wrote this really good descriptive paragraph 4 creative writing, with all these cool words and stuff, but i didn't share it becuz i thought it would make me seem lika a smartie. But sometimes i will share. 50/50. p.s.: i luv writing!!!!
I think you should never be ashamed of your intelligence. But, you're right. There is a right way and a wrong way to show it off. You can share your work without seeming like a know-it-all, as long as you make sure you give other people a chance to share their work and extend the same politeness you'd want from your classmates.
I always love to go up and share my work becuse I always love what I work on and I am not worried that people won't like it. Who cares as long as you like it?
When I'm nervous I ask myself why? After, I don't know why, so I just speak up, being wrong doesn't amke you stupid, it just means there is still room to learn. Try it!
I often feel confident enough to shoot my hand up when the teacher asks a question, even though I blunder sometimes - like when my teacher asked what Christmas day was in French, I said, "Jour de l'An, ooh, I mean, I mean ... uhm,... Jour de Noel!" Though I don't like coming up to share my work... I worry if they don't like it.
my teachers always call on me because i look like i'm always paying attention but i'm lucky if i get the last few words of a sentence if they are asking a question. i usto sit right behind my crush and i would always be asked the same question if he got it wrong and i would get it right. i'm always being asked to read my essays in front of the class even if i don't think they are very good or raise my hand. anyone have any ideas on how i can pay attetion more in classeven if i already know the lesson? Even if you feel like you already know the lesson, there are still a lot of reasons why you should pay attention. A lot of learning happens when the class gets into a discussion -- your classmates and your teachers can give you perspectives you haven't thought of. And, it's also just plain good manners to pay attention. You'd want people to pay attention to you if you were teaching, wouldn't you? Good luck!

I am really shy to speak in front of the whole class and to share something to the class. But now I m ok at it, really. In grade 3, I had to share my piece of work that i had done in class. So i did. Then the next day. I became more confident.
In one of my classes I don't like to raise my hand because if i give the wrong answer, the teacher makes fun of me in front of the class, but If i dont raise my hand he gets mad and says i don't know anything and he once called me stupid!
Uh oh! Your teacher should never call you stupid or make fun of you! I would tell your parents about what is going on, and they can help you make it stop.
My friend whos in 6th grade will laugh at anything. One time in the cafetaria there was this boy and my friend goes laughing at him for no reason.He looks like an normal looking kid!!!!!I wanna know how she feels if she got laughed at.Oh wait no one will laugh at her because she's the popular kid in 6th grade.
In, basketball, we were doing a exersize w/ the ball and she said "behind you" really softly and I didn't hear and I looked behind me and there were the JV guys running and I missed the ball. Then, coach yelled at me for missing the ball because I was looking at what was behind me and the JV guys heard!

I feel totally nervous when I have to say something unplanned in front of the class. Like, if I'm giving a speech or reading something, I'm kind of OK. When it comes to just talking... I'm not so great at that!

It depends on what I'm sharing. If I'm sharing my answers for a class worksheet then I'm fine, but if I have to read my report, or paragraph, (things like that,) I get a little nervous!
Yeah, whenever we're reading out loud in class, I quickly skim the pages or paragraphs that I'm supposed to read so that I feel more confident about the words when I have to say them aloud.

o my gosh yesterday n class my teacher told the whole class that an answer wasnt right and then she asked me what the right answer was and i told her the anser that she just told us was wrong because i wasnt listening-oops my face turned bright red when she said that was wrong

I think everyone should share there answers because I think that everyone can have a different point of view..U might think of it this way...but another person might look at in a different way.Then you can talk it out and actually see why your answer is wrong! i answer wrong all the time, and when I feel scared about doing something I repeat these words to myself "you are confident, you are cool, you know that it is not a big deal" then I take deep breath. It always works for me!

Char please reply. I beg you. I really do feel confident to go up to the class and share my work but it is really awkword when you get an answer wrong. Sometimes kids laugh if you make a mistake. My teacher never calls on me when I raise my hand though. IT IS SO annoying. I mean when a person wants to be called on and dose not get picked it is REALLY annoying. I think to get up there and share your work is a treausre.
You're right -- sharing your work can be a very positive experience, so it would be great if you could do it all the time! Maybe your teacher is trying to encourage other people to share their work, too.

it takes alotof cool confidence to go up to the board and answer a question... especially in my school. but i try hard and the majority of the time i get it right and was glad i tried... it can be embarrasing to get an answer wrong but if you laugh it off and so do others but you know they are laughing with you NOT at you it helps.
You should always try and answe, even if your wrong. If you are wrong you and your friens can laugh about it later. Don't let what other people say hurt you. You had the guts to answer the question in the first place

i feel confident to share my work in my best subjects. Advice: If you want to share ur wrk, and the teacher has to correct you ,try and stay cool, make a joke out of it, that way people won't make fun of you.
I feel confident enough to share my work (at least most of the time) but for those of you who don't, here's some advice: If you are ever shy about asking what seems like a stupid question my mother always tells me, "The only silly question is one not asked." Sometimes I have trouble speaking in class, but when I get stuck I think to myself "these are all my friends!" and it works! this year our school had a Veterans day assembly with over 900 people! I got up and read the essay I wrote! I felt really proud that I overcame my fear.

Sometimes when i raise my hand in class to ask a question, i ask it like once i asked if alaska was closer to russia because it used to belong to them and on the world map it is. she made me embarresed by yelling at me. for the rest of the day i didnt even think about raising my hand.

im confindent to raise my hand in class now. i used to know the answer but leave it to someone else to say outloud. At my parents evening the teachers said they could tell i knew the answers but wasn't confident enough. im confident now though.
sometimes. In gym, I get to embarrased to kick the ball in kickball, or be picked on a team. But, besides confidence, the kids always cheer me on. But you can count on confidence.
i am very shy and get embarassed easily. everytime i hav 2 share something in front of class, i get so nervous and my words start to sputter. When that happens, i get so embarassed that i wanna run home. i also cant even walk by my crush without my face flaring up. i dont know what 2 do.
Ugh. I know. Unfortunately, our bodies have their own little ways of showing OTHERS how embarrassed we are, like a red face, shaking hands, or stuttered words. The only way to really get over those things is to take deep breaths when you start to feel nervous. That will help calm you down a bit!

That's very good advice! When you know you're going to be up in front of other people, make sure you're wearing something that makes you feel comfortable. And ALWAYS check your fly before you go up to make sure it's zipped!
hahaha. i am like the most confident person ever when it comes to sharing work. i really dont care what other people think, and i usually just burst out singing some random song during class, and no one really cares because they know that im just being....well me, so i dont really care. there thats my ling winded answer.

Ditto ulajay!!! I have SO much more confidence because I'm at an all girls school. Once I had a book report and I had to get up and present it. I kept stuttering and saying Ummmmm.... Meanwhile my crush, and everyone else was laughing really hard!!! I was SO embarrassed!!!! But I think he likes me even though we go to different schools, so people forget about embarrassing moments. If you just pretend it never happened, people will forget easily. Walk into school the next day with more confidence than you ever did before, and people will admire you because of your courage and confidence (my schools goals) especially people who are shy and ussually make the most mistakes!! I know how you feel. That's why when I'm feeling shy, I encourage myself to raise my hand at least once a day to give an answer. Like Ms. Rodriguez says, it's better to raise your hand and get it wrong than to not raise your hand at all!
I really don't like seeing myself on TV for the middle school news or for the elections- embarrasing! I get even more embarrassed because I have a twin sister and she is on there too. Everyone stares at me- I hate it!
Yeah! Isn't it weird that when you see yourself on TV, you look like a total stranger? Or, when you hear your voice on a recording, you sound COMPLETELY different? It's creepy!

I used to not be very confident in elementary school cause there were lotz of boys! Now i go to an all-girls middle school and I totally feel confident in front of my buddies!

I raised my hand once during my best subject, Language Arts, and I said "This ones easy" then said my answer. My answer was so off, the teacher said, "Huh?" and made a face. Everypne was laughing at me!!!
Oh yah! I love putting my hand up in class and answerring a question. When I get it right I feel good about myself, and when I get it wrong I just shrug it off because I'm not the only one who doesn't answer it right all the time! my chemistry teacher sort of forces us to come to the chemistry lab tomorrow and from four o'clock on i'm gonna learn english with my friend. super! (or not).

that cool that ur dad bring stuff for u and ur sis. i been to wasington D.C it really cool there and i live n america.. i had a bad day today... alot of drama happen at my school today and its only monday oh how i wish it was the weekend the only good thing about my week is that i have a soccer game and i cant wait for that other wise here come a drama week save me!!! 
anyways today was fun i went to the mall and hung out all day
