Three's Company?

Having an older sister can be tough sometimes, right? Besides the little fights and squabbles and things, she also gets to do almost EVERYTHING before I do! Like, she’s in high school right now, so she’s always talking about all the cool stuff they do there, like clubs, dances, and pep rallies, and how you have so much more independence as a high schooler. I know I’ll get there someday, but in the meantime, I’m super jealous.

So, imagine how I felt when Elena Maria started dating. All of a sudden, my sister wasn’t around as often to just hang out, watch movies, and do crafts together—like we used to. Sometimes, she’ll even have a boy over to do homework together at the kitchen table. Or, she’ll be going to the movies with a group of friends (including the boy she likes) to see a film I really want to watch!

you tell us ...

As her “little” sister (I hate being called that!), what should I do? How can I stay involved in her life? I miss my big sister!

Having a crush on your friend's brother can be tricky. If you feel comfortable, try talking to her about your feelings first. See if you can get a sense for whether she likes the idea or not. If she's cool with it, you can totally ask him out if you feel ready. But, like you said, if he says no, you're looking at some awkwardness for a while.

Whoa! Slow down, chica! Dating is something you do when YOU feel ready. There is no right age or wrong age to start. Even if all your friends (and your sister) are dating, that doesn't mean you HAVE to. You can totally just be friends with boys, and there's nothing wrong with that. Plus, 7th graders sometimes have a different idea of dating than younger girls and boys have. Elena Maria (my sister, who is in high school) and I talk about this sometimes. Dating and romance is all about what YOU feel ready for, so try not to let anyone pressure you.

That's an interesting perspective! It's not just younger sibs who have to deal with bfs and gfs. Older ones have to, too. I'd say just think about what would make YOU comfortable if you were someone's girlfriend. Kind of like a "treat others how you want to be treated" sort of thing.

Scary!!! Sometimes, it's better just to ask him to dance AT the dance, rather than to the dance itself. That way, you can get ready with your BFFs and dance in a group with each other -- not worrying about whether your date is having a good time. If you like dancing with him and he likes dancing with you, that's a good sign! If it feels weird, you can just go back to your BFFs and dance like a star!

Friday movie nights are fun! Maybe your sister will be out on some Fridays, but not all. Let her know or show her how important that time together is to you, and hopefully she'll keep that in mind in the future.

Despite what other people say, there are very few rules about who can date whom. Really! So, if your bf is a 7th grader, and you two don't have a problem with it, then why should it be an issue? The important thing is that he is a good person and he treats you with respect. The age thing only matters if you let OTHER people influence your feelings. It's hard not to, but if this boy is a keeper, why let age ruin it?

hey izzy! i have a sis that 17 yrs old! she's always filling out college applications or doing hw or going out w/her friends to a movie that i want to see. also, she's allowed to do sooo much more than me and i know she like, 5 yrs older but i still feel jelous so what i do is try to think that someday i'll be as old as her. plus, on weekends when she isn't doing hw, i ask if she wants to watch a movie or play a game so i can spend time with her. so dont bug your sister, but talk to her about how u feel and she'll probly understand and find some movies or games she likes to play and you'll have some quality time with your sister. it works for me, so hope this helps!!!!!!

MANY dads like to tease their kids about boys and stuff, but sometimes, it's like "Hello! Stop asking me!" A lot of girls (including myself) like to keep crushes to themselves, which is totally OK. I'd say share the info you want to share about crushes, but if you start going out with a boy, clue your parents in before they hear it from someone else!

u can stay involved by researching on wat she likes 2 do (besides hanging out w/ her BF). then u can think of a game or a craft 2 do 2gether. if that doesn't work, u should tell her how u feel, im sure she'll understand. im the oldest 2 and my sisters tell me everything. i help them as much as i can. so just try and fail, but try again (if u fail)!

Hola! I know sometimes it feels like EVERYONE has a boyfriend except you, but really that's not true. Like me--I have lots of friends who are boys, but no boyfriend. I'm just not ready for that yet. Try focusing on something you love, like art or sports, and just let the boyfriend thing happen when it happens.

I totally worried about the same stuff before Elena Maria started dating! The thing is, your sis will probably pick a really great guy to date and that stuff won't even be an issue. But if for some reason her BF isn't your favorite guy, that'll be the time to have a heart-to-heart with your sis and let her know you're concerned about her.

Hmmm. If the main reason you like him is that he's really cute, it sounds like maybe you don't really know him as a person that well. Elena Maria always tells me that it's more important to like a guy for he is, rather than what he looks like. ok well I have an older sister and my bff has an older brother and we can totaly tell that they ( my sis and her brother.) like each other but they don't do anything about it and it is killing us well not killing us but it drives us crazy and we know that it is not good to butt in to somebodys love life! Well what should we do I mean my sister asks us what she should do if she should talk to him or let him come to her to ask her to the dance. Well we know that they are perfict for each other and they know that too but we don't know what to do I mean we need them to kiss! smilies/kiss.gif

Hola! I totally know how you feel--that's exactly what Avery and I think about Scott and Elena Maria! BUT, the truth is, the more you try to get them together, the more they're going to resist. I think you got it right when you said it's wrong to mess with somebody else's love life. Just leave it to them, and if it's supposed to happen, it'll happen.

Hola! Starting conversations with boys is always kind of hard. The next time you guys are hanging out, try asking him about something you're both interested in, like a sport or a certain kind of music. Even if you can't get a romantic thing going, at least you'll end up with a better friend!

Hey there. I think it's always a bad idea to try to make people break up. Usually you just end up with everyone mad at YOU! For now, just concentrate on something else you like doing--like a sport or music or something. Then if it happens with this guy, it happens, and if it doesn't, you didn't waste your time worrying about it!
