In this official study published by the American Academy of Pediatrics, Terrill Bravender, MD, MPH, Alexandra Russell, MD, Richard J. Chung, MD, Sarah C. Armstrong, MD Department of Pediatrics, and Duke University Medical Center, Durham, North Carolina, researchers used Beacon Street Girls book #6, Lake Rescue, to determine if reading an age-appropriate novel has the potential to improve BMI percentile and exercise- and nutrition-related knowledge and behaviors in girls aged 9 to 13 years who were enrolled in a childhood obesity-treatment program.
