Surviving Gym Class

OK, so gym class pretty much rules, but even I—the Ave—can admit that it’s not for everyone. Like, in your academic classes, you just sit there and unless you’re my friend Charlotte, you can do so without major injury or embarrassment.

But, P.E. is a whole different story. There are plenty of reasons why a girl might get nervous about gym class. So, I’m here to break it down and help you ACE phys. ed!

ATTIRE Gym certainly isn’t a fashion show (no matter WHAT Maeve says), but you def want to be comfortable and confident during gym class. I’m usually in shorts, a tee-shirt, and sneakers, but I know a lot of girls who like to wear yoga pants or sweatpants and long-sleeve tee-shirts to gym. My only rule when it comes to P.E. fashion is to remember to bring your clothes home to WASH them. Wrinkly, smelly shirts aren’t cool.

ATTITUDE If you LOVE gym and love participating, you’re OK. But, if you don’t like gym, standing around with your arms crossed and your hip stuck out isn’t going to make it any better. Believe it or not, but if you’re tired, bored, cranky, whatever… adjust the ‘tude and get moving! It’ll actually make you feel better—I promise.

AVOID Three words: Gym Class Warriors. These are the kids who take gym WAY too seriously. Like, they’re willing to injure themselves or others to show off how athletic they are. Whatever. Set a good example by being a good sport—let everyone take a turn, don’t hog the ball, and don’t let the outcome of the game cause you to brag or get upset.

GAME TIME! Not everyone is good at ALL sports, so no one expects you to be. But, you don’t want to just stand there like a lamppost! So, here are some tips on basic moves YOU can do during class to participate!

Vollyball
This game is a fave among gym teachers, probably because it’s pretty simple. However, players have to rotate positions, which means it’ll be your turn to serve the ball eventually. Don’t panic! Here’s what you do:

•    Get a good stance with your feet, one in front of the other with knees slightly bent.
•    If you are right-handed, hold the volleyball out in front of you in your left hand (switch these instructions if you are left-handed).
•    Make a fist with your right hand.
•    Swing your right fist underhand (like bowling a bowling ball) and hit the ball out of your left hand with the inside of your wrist. That’s basically all there is to it!

**********

Basketball
I love basketball, and I don’t care what people say about the vertically challenged (aka, short people), I’m pretty good at it! So, I can teach you a thing or two about shooting a jump shot:

•    Hold the ball in both hands and turn your body directly toward the basket.
•    Spread the fingers of your dominant hand (whichever one you write with) over the ball and support the ball from underneath with your other hand.
•    Bend your elbows up so that the basketball is by your neck.
•    Jump up in the air with your legs together and push the ball up and toward the basket using your dominant hand.
•    You’ll have to practice this one, but a jump shot should feel like one motion. Swish!

**********

Soccer It’s pretty easy to kick a soccer ball, but it’s harder to get it off the ground and to where you want it to go. Here’s my guide:

•    Jog toward the ball and plant the foot you are not kicking with about six inches away from the ball.
•    Point that foot in the direction you want the ball to go.
•    Bring your other foot back to wind up, and then kick the ball right at the center. You should kick the ball not with your toes, but with the top part of your foot near your shoelaces.
•    To practice getting the ball into the air, try to get your foot under the ball as you kick it. Also, try leaning back a bit when you kick.

**********

Rope Climb
I know Katani hates it when it’s rope-climbing day in gym. She’s not too crazy about heights, and it’s hard for her to get up. Luckily, I LOVE climb ropes! Here’s what I told Katani:

•    Reach up and grab the rope with both hands above your head.
•    Pull down on the rope and bend your knees toward your chest to get off the ground.
•    Wrap one leg around the rope and pinch the rope between both feet. This will help you stay in place and not slide down.
•    Try to straighten your knees as much as possible and reach up as high as you can to grasp the rope tightly in both hands.
•    Bring your legs up and wrap your leg around the rope. Repeat the process. When you reach the top, remember not to slide down! Rope burn can HURT!

ok I go to gym class 3 days in a row. We play soccer, volleyball, basketball, and ect. But mostly in hard games like shooting basket I always get very nervous. And sometimes I get things wrong. What can I do? But the bad thing is that I really like basketball and I want to be really good at it.

Um, liking basketball and wanting to be good at it is soooo NOT a bad thing! Everybody gets nervous sometimes, even me, the Great Ave. You should try practicing the things you get nervous about outside of gym class. Like, when Betsy Fitzgerald wanted to join the b-ball team, she practiced free throws every single day. And she got to be awesome at them! You can totally do the same thing.

I hate kickball. When we were playing, I kicked the ball, and went around the bases. but, when I was done, she (the gym teacher) thought I wasn't good enough so she let me sit out on the side. We were outside by the way. i was watching the game, but then i screamed. A bee stung me. All of the sudden I couldn't breathe, and i could hardly talk. The gym teacher blew the whistle and ran over to me. She asked if I was ok and I made some weird noise because I couldn't speak. Then she made fun of me all day for that noise. i went to the nurse and it was so embarassing when they called all these numbers to find out what to do. They gave me medicine, and my friend helped calm me, but when my mom picked me up to go home, and fell right down on my face. did I mention I fell onto the school bake sale? Now THAT was embarassing. it was all because of kickball.

My embarrassing gym moment wasn't too long ago in 2007. We were playing kickball, right? I HATE kickball! It's so stupid, it makes no sense, and I despise it. I kept going in the back of the line, cause I didn't want to have ago cause I don't know how to play kickball. smilies/sad.gif
What's the use of having a turn, anyway if you don't know how to play and you have a chance of doing the wrong thing and people start yelling at you?! Well, at least the boys do it, and I don't like it when they yell, but they haven't yelled at me yet. Phew. They make such a great fuss out of winning and getting competitive. Out of a stupid, doesn't-make-any-sense-game.
Well, the coach stops the game to tell everyone that a girl keeps hiding from the game (I was not hiding, I was in the back of the line). Major blush moment. So the kids tell me to have a turn. I do, but I'm out. Wasn't that hard, as long as I had a turn, I was off the coach's hook, right?
Ugh, wrong. That bad coach stopped the game AGAIN to ask us how many times we've gone. Then he asked a girl "Nicole" how many times she's gone. One problem, there's no Nicole in the class! And it is so obivous that the "Nicole" he's talking about is me! (My name isn't Nicole, by the way).
"Nicole? Who's Nicole?" a blond boy with glasses asks.
"She is," said another boy in black shorts, pointing at me.
"She's not Nicole," the glasses boy says, but only because my name's not Nicole, but he's unaware that the coach meant me so nobody would know he was pointing at me, but he couldn't "hide" it good. He just wanted to embarrass me on purpose, I know he did, the freak!!
Everyone chatting about this Nicole and mentioning me. I felt like I needed to cry, I was sooo embarrassed, but not in front of a whole gym class. "Who did he mean by Nicole?" a girl asked. "He meant...," said another girl, saying my name out the end of the sentence.
At 7th period, I couldn't hold it in any longer, I burst out crying. The teachers helped calmed me down, but that didn't work. It did with my mom, though. I'm very sensitive, so I couldn't help crying.
That's why, for now on, I never, ever want to play kickball again

I've been hit by balls on accident too many times, and I already have a flinching problem. I'm not like you, a tomboy. I'm more of Maeve or Katani. I want to look like I know what I'm doing in gym and class and not embarrass myself at the same time. Got any good advice to survive gym?

-Cheetah_Girl_Fan-

Hey Cheetah Girl Fan. Flinching isn't necessarily a bad thing - I mean, you flinch to protect yourself because a speeding ball is aimed at right at you! Next time, though, try holding out your arms to catch or hit the ball (if it's like dodgeball or volleyball or something). Even if you miss, you know that you gave it your best shot. Maybe practice with your friends the next time you guys have a sleepover. (But do your practicing outside - trust me on that one!)

Sooooo not cool of them to make you guys feel bad about yourselves! But it's awesome that you keep trying hard anyway. If you don't let the gym class warriors know they're getting to you, they'll probably get tired of bugging you and leave you alone. But if things ever seem dangerous AT ALL, you should tell your gym teacher right away. Like they say, it's all fun and games until somebody gets hurt - and that would be NO fun.

Make sure you know how you're holding your stick right. Ask your coach or teacher if you are unsure.
Don't be afraid to be aggressive. Tip: To steal the puck from an opposing player, strike your stick accross the ground underneaththe opponents stick at the curv which simply allows you to take it from underneath. I use it all the time!
Always keep your eye on the puck especially on defense. About lines, always consult with your team too!

Chillax, dudette! The first thing to remember is that everyone else is just as nervous as you are (even if they act like they're not.) Seriously, everyone is going to be thinking so much about themselves that they won't even notice you. So you totally don't have to sweat it. But it might make you feel better to go in with a game plan - like, make sure your gym bag is organized, so you can just grab your clothes and get dressed quickly. I've embarrassed myself many times in gym, and I HATE gym. My advice, if the class is playing basketball or with any type of hard ball, stay alert and clear of any balls hitting you and humiliating you 4 a whole school year.

heya Avery! For gym class at my school, we have a gym uniform, so we don't have to worry about what to wear. In Out of Bounds when you were refereeing, Megan's mom was really intense! I'm looking forward to more BSG books with you as the star! CUL8R!

Yeah, Megan's mom was scary intense! I got through it by keeping my cool, though.

yo Ave!
How do I survive gym class? Well I try my best! Yeah, maybe I am a little overweight. Still, I am very fast and extra hyper. So in soccer or basketball practice I usually try my best and never take it too seriously or too unneccerary!
This is my advice to every one who wants to pass gym class!

Primo advice! I'm like super high energy too, so I def know where you're coming from. It really helps!

AT THE END WE PLAYED EVERY MAN (OR WOMAN)FOR HIMSELF(OR HERSELF) eVERYONE WAS SCARED OF MY KICKS SO I JUST ENDED UP STANDING THERE

Whoa, you're a hardcore kicker! But you don't want everyone to be SO afraid of you that they won't even come close! It takes two to spar, so maybe ease up on the intimidation factor next time - you'll prob get better practice that way.

Here's a tip:
Whenever you're doing something specific in gym (such as soccer smilies/wink.gif) Always listen to your gym class teacher. If he says keep your arms out when you kick, keep your arms when you kick no matter what you do on your soccer team. I found it really helpful because I got a super mark in the soccer section of gym class!

I am HORRIBLE at gym but the thing is to try. But I've learned some stuff.

* TRY!
* With Gym Class Warriors generally try to avoid them.
* Run! Like at home, try to run or just walk often, it helps build strength and helps you in gym class.
* Have fun! And remember these days it's not the sports people that make money its the people who have jobs, anything other than sports, gyms just for fun!

Thanks so much for this Ave! I play B-ball and I'm the newest and youngest and people are better than me in gym class too. I always think "Some people here are better than me but I'm better than others, too."

Yep, that's what my mom always says about life - there's always someone better than you at something, and there's always someone who's not as good as you. But really, that's a good thing, because you get to learn from the people who are better than you and help the people who aren't as good - and when you help them, you'll prob learn something too!

Hey Charlotte189! Your coach's reaction is so not cool. I mean, you're just trying to learn, right? Make sure you always have a positive attitude when you talk to the coach, but if things are still bad, try talking to another teacher that you trust about your issue with the coach. She'll prob have some tips for how to deal with your coach.

Congrats on your mile time! That's awesome. What's not awesome, though, is the way your coach is playing favorites. Is there another teacher at the school you feel close to - like your homeroom teacher, or even the principal? You could ask that teacher to set aside a little time to talk to you one day, and then tell her what's up. She'll prob give you some good advice on what to do.

Dear avery,
My gym survival tips are that u should always bring a hair elastick because sometimes my hair will totally frizz a lot! Also i think since my gym is like totally freezing bring a sweatshirt and then when u get hot and sweaty u can take it right off and have a t- shirt under it. Also dont wear your best stuff like your new adorable shirt just wear a t-shirt and some jeans. Those r my survival tips!
